A stock or equity market is the collection of purchasers and traders, a system of economic dealings, not distinct bodies, of stocks or shares. Stocks are tradable assets (equity securities) listed on a stock exchange in addition to those which can only be confidentially traded. The markets which issue and trade shares by means of exchange are known as stock markets or as the equity markets which are one of the most essential parts of a market economy. They offer firms which can acquire assets and shareholders with a part of the possession of the business, and the chance to gain huge profits depending on the firm's potential performance. The US stock market is an everyday word used to discuss a place where stocks (units of ownership in a business) and bonds are traded. The aim of an investor is to purchase the stock, keep it for some time, and then sell the stock for more than the amount you paid for it, thus getting a profit. Investors holding stock for more than 15 years generally succeed in the market. Stocks are long-term investments. However, there are no guarantees.

Stocks are up in mid-day trading today as retail sales came in strong and EU showed some progress in handling the debt crisis. Apple is also holding up after the death of Steve Jobs.

Oil has been rallying on optimism from Europe, but after paring some gains in late date day trading after reports of continued division in the eurozone, investors have to question whether the rally will last.
