      Definitely! I would argue that just as important as checking progress is adjusting instruction based on that progress.

      good point, Russ. It's a big shift from "assessment to report learning" from "assessment to improve learning." I see this difference as one that will be tough for the masses to understand due to the tradition of summative assessments.

      I think this is key with students of today. As we (educators) realize that students are learning differently today b/c of the way they use technology, I think we will see that using MORE formative assessments and giving students MORE immediate feedback will be even MORE effective than we think. Students receive immediate feedback all the time from their peers; I think it should be the same with their teachers.

      One of the things I notice is the use of the generic terms. Sometimes my staff gets so caught up in the "tools", ie specific software, they over look the big picture.

      With technology the 'tools' seem to change so quickly - that is where 'looking at the big picture', 'being willing to adapt to new changes, and 'the process of learning about technology' becomes important.

      I am not sure that we currently have anyone on staff that is a master of all of these essential concepts. I see a lot of Professional Development needed in this area.

    Some times we forget that technology items - computers, overhead, SmartBoard - are all tools to help us help our students. There is a whole new realm of literacy as mentioned, technology literacy, for both teachers and students. One overarching literacy principle is how to decide which tool to use when and what skills are needed to carry out the work.

    It is a very broad range to cover with the words "technological knowledge and skills to learn effectively and live productively" because we know that that will look so different for each individual student. With that in mind, I feel the 'process' becomes the important thing and as educators we need to try to 'open the doors' and 'help each other go through them' - teacher to student, student to teacher, student to student and teacher to teacher.

    I like this vision that we are striving for. Today's students need technology knowlege and skills. All students will be able to make individual contributions if we keep this goal. Tehnology has changed the way we work today and how we have our relationships.

Formative and Summative Assessment in the Classroom - 0 views

  • When teachers use sound instructional practice for the purpose of gathering information on student learning, they are applying this information in a formative way. In this sense, formative assessment is pedagogy and clearly cannot be separated from instruction. It is what good teachers do. The distinction lies in what teachers actually do with the information they gather. How is it being used to inform instruction? How is it being shared with and engaging students? It's not teachers just collecting information/data on student learning; it's what they do with the information they collect.

      well said. I think that putting this into practice will be a challenge. Convincing others that this mentality is where we should be going might be even more of a challenge though. Wow.

  • Clear achievement targets or criteria for success are provided to students and parents in student friendly language before instruction begins. Doing so informs students what is expected of them upfront. Imagine how difficult it would be for a young person to build a log cabin for the first time without a picture, and then get graded on how similar their log home is to the picture they did not get to see. That would not be fair. However, providing clear achievement targets to students and parents before instruction begins can be a very efficient, effective, equitable formative assessment strategy.

Should the Textbook Determine the Essential Skills We Teach? | AllThingsPLC - 6 views

    Although textbooks contain an incredible amount of content and a "game plan" for teachers, I believe that the most effective classrooms would use textbooks as a resource - not the only tool in the classroom. I also feel that many of the essential skills students need such as collaboration, inquiry, curiosity, innovation are hardly addressed by the standard text. There are so many current resources including and ways to publish, that teachers should be willing to break free from the textbook.

    In my world...teaching a Certified Nurse's Aid class at high school, the textbook certainly is the "ingredient list" of skills that are required for passing the State testing...how one mixes and stirs those ingredients however is open to interpretation and I feel strongly that students, particularly at the high school level need exposure to variations of the "recipe" of the CNA...hence they are taken on a variety of clinical learning opportunities, nursing home, respite care for children with disabilities, home health care....

    I agree that textbooks are the tools that introduce content. There are many other resources teachers can partner with the textbook to convey content in such a way that each student develops their own set of skills and knowledge. As each teacher has a different teaching style, each student has a different learning style and presenting the information in a variety of ways adds to their success in the understanding of the material.

  • When we discuss the Iowa Core, this is an example of what we need to do. Get rid of the rest of that stuff. Determine what is important. And then have a deeper lesson, leading to deeper conceptual and procedural knowledge, with authentic and formative assessment. Which will lead to permanent learning.

      This is me! What can I do differently next year? My answer is PLN.
  • A profile will go a long way in letting people know who you are. This is the place you can put in your full school name, location, description and link to your school website. You will also want to put in a picture, either of a mascot or school symbol. That helps other users identify, quickly, who you are.
  • Hashtags- A good idea is to also come up with a hashtag. This will allow you to track conversations even if your account is not mentioned in a tweet. So for example we use in our district, the initials as our hashtag, #wsfcs. The hashtag is good because classes and teachers can send tweets and still reference your school with out mentioning you in the tweet. You can then collect them and retweet them as you see fit. And you don't have to follow everyone either to see what folks are saying. If you have monitors set up near your entrance you can use a program like Twitterfall to display all the tweets coming in on your hashtag. That might also entice folks to check out your Twitter account and learn more about your presence there.

      Our system uses PowerSchool for academic notices (assignments and grades), and each of the teachers has a website for information specific to what the teacher teaches.  I feel we need to be conscious of what we push notice out and feel that it would be inappropriate for teachers to push assignments and scores out to students. For example, if a student takes a one semester class 1st semester and gets assignments tweeted to their cell phone, then what prevents those assignments from being pushed out to them 2nd semester when they are no longer in the class (do they unsubscribe)?   It seems to me though that Twitter would be a useful option if hosted by the administration to post game scores or school cancellation notices or meeting reminders (so long as that last list were kept down to one or two important reminders a week - at MOST).
