Race to the Top evens playing field, challenges teachers | The Iowa Center for Public A... - 5 views

  • This move to participate in the national standards [officially known as the “Common Core”] was part of a national trend.  So far, 48 states have adopted all or part of these national standards.  The reason?  The Obama administration’s “Race to the Top” program. “They put some big carrots out there for states,” Latham said, referring to the administration’s $4 billion competition. One of the ways states score points in the competition is doing exactly as Iowa did: adopt both state and national standards.  So far, 11 states and the District of Columbia have won funding in two rounds of competition. Iowa has not even been a finalist, and thus the state has not seen the tens of millions of dollars in aid that other states have won.  However, four Iowa schools with high poverty and low achievement rates did receive grants from the Race to the Top legislation.  Being committed to adopting state and national standards was key for those schools to receive the grants, Latham said.

Is this really why we adopted the CCSS? I have never heard that before and this article isn't convincing of that point.

I'm interested to see the opinions of those in the ICC group regarding this book. I have not read it, but I know Gladwell had one of the keynotes at NECC this year and Outliers is brought up fairly often by my colleagues. It's definitely a book I'd like to read at some point, if only for the sake of seeing what all the fuss is about.

Well, we picked up our 30th member today, so I figured an introductions thread would be appropriate.

I'm getting ready to start my second year as a teacher this fall. I'm moving to a new school (Waukee Middle School) and a new subject area. I'll be teaching 6th grade Language Arts, moving from K-5 Talented and Gifted last year.

This group started from a short discussion Matt Townsley and I were having about the Iowa Core, so it's really amazing to me that so many people are here to help us learn.

Who are you? Where are you? What are you hoping to gain from this group?

TeachPaperless: 21st Century Skills: My Personal Mission Statement - 0 views

  • In schoolhouse lingo, I could only declare teachers and students 'absent' from the board of P21. And until that absence is rectified, the board will only symbolize the top-down old-fashioned 20th century style of management that's gotten us into so many of the problems that as a nation we currently face.

I don't know a ton abou P21, but student centeredness is a facet of Iowa Core, and it should be for all of education in the 21st Century.
  • building collaborative partnerships between families, communities, and educators independent of any proprietary business interests.

Collaboration is so key to the world our students will grow up in. I feel there is a mentality that collaboration = cheating with the kids I've learned with (and when I was in high school). It will be important to change the connotation of the word.

It shows something negative to students when the administration doesn't truth them (or their teachers) with the Internet.
