New Wilderness Protection for 2 Million Acres Signed Today - 0 views

    President Barack Obama has signed legislation today that sets aside more than 2 million acres as protected wilderness. The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, a collection of nearly 170 separate measures, protects land, lakes and shorelines for future generations. It also represents one of the largest expansions of wilderness protection in a quarter-century, protecting vast tracts of land, hundreds of miles of rivers and trails, and historic sites and heritage areas.

Hike to see Azaleas on Gregory Bald in Great Smoky Mountains NP - 0 views

    Make plans now to see the world famous flame azaleas at the summit of Gregory Bald in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The spectacular display of wildflowers usually peak during the mid-to-late June time period. The hike to Gregory Bald is a roundtrip of 11.3 miles and a climb of more than 3000 feet, but is well worth the effort.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy needs your support ASAP - 0 views

    State legislatures have recently approved for the creation of specialty license plates for the Appalachian Trail. Funds produced from the sale of the plates will be shared with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for the support and management of the Appalachian Trail. In order for the state to produce the license plates, the ATC needs 1000 paid applications as soon as possible. As of March 11, the ATC has only 362 applications.

    Bear spray is illegal in national parks, however, individual parks can override this law using an instrument called a 'Superintendent's Compendium.' This explains why bear spray is allowed in national parks out west, but remains illegal in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
