My name is Charles Edge. I recently moved from sunny Los Angeles to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it's colder on the outside but far warmer on the inside. I enjoy spending time with my wife Lisa and daughter Emerald, and Archie the dog too. Professionally, I am an engineer. I consult, speak and write about my engineering endeavors but at the heart of it all I am an engineer. I work at 318, the largest Mac Consultancy I am aware of. At 318 I manage projects, training, engineers and many other aspects in my role as Director of IT. I also still do a pretty decent number of fairly complicated jobs for clients and occasionally write a piece of code or somesuch, which I'll start making available on the apps page of this site.

Sleepwatcher for Mac OS X - 0 views

SleepWatcher is a command line tool (daemon) for Mac OS X that monitors sleep, wakeup and idleness of a Mac. It can be used to execute a Unix command when the Mac or the display of the Mac goes to sleep mode or wakes up or after a given time without user interaction. It also can send the Mac to sleep mode or retrieve the time since last user activity. A StartupItem, sample start and sleep scripts and the source code for sleepwatcher are included in the download. A little bit knowledge of the Unix command line is required to benefit from this software. SleepWatcher is published under the GNU General Public License.
airport - the Little Known Command Line Wireless Utility - OS X Daily - 0 views
-
Strangely hidden from the casual user is a spiffy command line utility that allows you to view, configure, and troubleshoot your Mac's wireless connection. It doesn't appear to be well documented, and judging by the obscure location of the command, Apple probably didn't think it would be too useful for the average Mac user. But the hidden command line airport tool is very useful indeed, so here is how to access it, and how you can use it too. The first thing you'll want to do is create a symbolic link to the airport command, because it is situated in a very inconvenient location for quick usage.
Image cleanup script « Managing OS X - 0 views

Here's a cleaned-up version of the script I use, with site-specific stuff removed for the most part. If you use this, you'll need to modify the paths to any local user home directories for any local users you have on your image. There are generic examples for a local admin user named "admin" and the root user (which if you never login as root, you shouldn't have to clean up!)

How to force certain input language? - The macosxhints Forums - 0 views

you can select from the International Preferences pane to allow the input source to be system-wide or document specific. I've got my set to 'document specific'. This lets me enter Arabic in one document, Greek in another,

after a couple of switches input source becomes the same for all windows/applications.

This started happening to me too (in my case, switching from US to British on its own will) but only after I started using the NoScript and Diigo Toolbar plugins for Firefox. I don't use Adium. The switch to British makes it a real pane to type microblogging hashtags, as the UK MacBook keyboard has no hash.
VirtualBox 2.1.0 Released: A Look at the Mac Version - O'Reilly Digital Media - Dec 200... - 0 views

I haven't updated my Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion to the latest versions yet. And, after a quick look at VirtualBox 2.1.0, I wonder if I will need to. It will probably take another couple of weeks of playing with 2.1.0 before I can make that call.
