    Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks Apple will introduce new iPods and new model laptop at a special event in September. It's not entirely speculation - the analyst observes Apple to have held such an event for the last three years. And while the analyst doesn't expect an iPhone nano or MacBook touch to appear at the show, he does anticipate some major revisions of Apple laptops. Munster predicts redesigned MacBooks at lower prices, along with a redesigned MacBook Pro. "We note that the MacBook has had the same design since its launch over two years ago, and the MacBook Pro has had essentially the same design since its launch over 2.5 years ago, which was very similar in design to the PowerBook G4 released over 5.5 years ago," he told clients.

    Version 2.1 of the firmware(INFO) for Apple's iPhone and iPhone 3G smartphones is now available through iTunes. This new firmware offers a handful of bug fixes as well as some stability improvements. Apple also claims that the new firmware will increase the iPhone's battery life for most users, in addition to more accurately displaying 3G signal strength.

  • "Legacy" Win32s apps from Windows 7 and earlier won't get the Windows 8 Metro UI goodness unless they are at least partially revised; even then, they'll be limited. Users will find that touch, syncing, and interapplication sharing won't always work.
  • (It's no accident that Excel was a Mac application first or that Windows Word shared almost nothing with DOS Word other than file format.) Microsoft's apparent strategy creates that risk for today's developers.
  • Sloppy developers could thwart Microsoft's seeming reinvention of Windows from taking root. Or, as happened with Apple's iOS, developers could wholeheartedly adopt the Windows 8 model and deliver an amazing portfolio of apps that pulls in users and drags IT behind them.
