    Most new consumer Macs come with a built-in iSight camera which can be used for all sorts of fun from video chatting in iChat, horsing around in Photo Booth, to third party apps like Gawker. Despite these fun and harmless uses, there are some security concerns with having a built-in camera particularly in academic and institutional settings, and because of this some System Administrators have taped covers over the iSight and even removed them from the machines entirely. Thankfully, there's a much easier way to disable the built-in iSight camera, all you have to do is move a file.

  • Gmail changed all that. Google’s free Web-based e-mail service offers a so-good-you-forget-it’s-there spam filter, multi-gigabytes of storage, custom addresses, and more, all for free.
  • On the Gmail Labs settings page (click on Settings, then select the Labs tab), you’ll find a list of more than 40 experimental Gmail features which you can selectively enable or disable. Google warns that these features may “change, break, or disappear” at any time, but I think a few of them are well worth the risk:

  • Multiple inboxes You don’t have to stick with the default inbox view. You can instead stack additional groups of messages—all messages with a certain label, or drafts, or all messages from your spouse, for example—beside, above, or below your main Gmail inbox. Three roommates in White Plains, N.Y., had about $5,000 worth of computer and entertainment equipment stolen 27-Apr-08. Then this last Tuesday, one victim who works at an Apple Store, Kait Duplaga, received a text message from a friend, who, spotting her on iChat, thought she'd recovered her computer.
