The more things change, the more they stay the same. That's what I thought watching coverage of Apple's Worldwide Developer's conference opening yesterday, where banners that read things like "Hasta la vista, Vista" and "Redmond has a cat, too. A copycat" hung.

Built into Mac OS X, but often neglected, is the concept of 'services'. They are small and targeted tools you can use in almost any program to insert text or do something useful with the current selection. Select text and Google it or look it up in a dictionary. Select a mathematic expression, like "6 * 7", and calculate it. Just select text (or place the insertion point where you want it) and pick a service from the Services menu in the application menu.

I've had a few instances where there was no way to setup round robin DNS or a load balancer and we were looking to alternate between a bunch of software update servers.  In order to do so, I've written a quick shell script to do so.  Here it is, in pieces, so it makes sense.

For individual Mac users or small businesses, it's usually not a problem deploying new Macs with a standard image -- as a Mac support specialist, you might just load each machine manually. But imagine if you need to deploy hundreds or thousands of Macs, PCs, or XServes. You'd need a small army of techs or a way to do the job automatically. That's where DeployStudio comes in handy. Well, it looks like the iPhone will finally be released in the country where it's made. There is one tiny problem though. It won't include Wi-Fi.

Mac OS X 10.5 requires you to enter an administrator's password to pause/resume a print queue, where no previous version of OS X has done so. This is extremely annoying in a lab setting -- if there's a paper jam or something, the queues on all the computers need to be restarted by an administrator, instead of the user just clicking Resume. I haven't seen a solution to this elsewhere, so here's what I came up with:

A hidden user is a user that can login to the system, but the account will not be displayed in the Login Window, where all of the other accounts on the machine are listed. In lab or work environments, it's often desired to have a hidden user that has Admin rights for administrative functions and/or other special circumstances.

Back in April, 2007, Nathaniel Gray introduced Backup Bouncer, a suite of tests that can be used to evaluate a backup solution's ability to preserve HFS+ filesystem metadata. Since then, I have discovered a few bugs in the test suite that would prevent it from accurately reporting results on various platform:OS combinations. I also identified some areas where Backup Bouncer could do a bit more, so I fleshed out some of the tests to be a bit more thorough.
