Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) 3 is the latest release of Apple's desktop management software, enabling administrators to distribute software, manage assets, and remotely administer Mac OS X systems via a network. ARD 3 takes advantage of innovative technologies in Mac OS X Tiger such as Automator. Automator is built on the concept of actions - discrete tasks such as opening a file, cropping an image, or sending a message. With Automator users can string together a series of actions into a single Automator workflow document. Much like a script, a workflow document can be executed, triggering each action and passing any data generated by the action to the next action in the workflow. Using the Automator actions installed with ARD and custom actions you create, you can develop workflows to automate repetitive system administration tasks. For example, workflows can distribute software, create detailed software and hardware reports, and remotely configure systems using ARD.

Intego, the Macintosh security specialist, today announced the release of VirusBarrier X5 10.5.3, an update to its acclaimed antivirus software that Macworld calls "the gold standard". This new version adds the ability to scan the iPhone and iPod touch for malware. VirusBarrier X5 is the only antivirus software that can eradicate malware from the iPhone and iPod touch.

Vodafone's just got a tiny, minor, insignificant announcement to make this morning: it's signed with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten markets, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy (so much for Telecom Italia), India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey.

iPhone Video Recorder (for 2G and 3G iPhone) is a powerful iPhone oriented video recorder produced by DreamCatcher.  The newly released version 3.0 supports on-the-fly (real time)recording to mov file with the video quality improved dramatically. iPhone Video Recorder for 3G iPhone can also record audio and video to the compressed mpeg4 format for space saving, an-hour-high-quality recording will be a file as small as 60MB.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks Apple will introduce new iPods and new model laptop at a special event in September. It's not entirely speculation - the analyst observes Apple to have held such an event for the last three years. And while the analyst doesn't expect an iPhone nano or MacBook touch to appear at the show, he does anticipate some major revisions of Apple laptops. Munster predicts redesigned MacBooks at lower prices, along with a redesigned MacBook Pro. "We note that the MacBook has had the same design since its launch over two years ago, and the MacBook Pro has had essentially the same design since its launch over 2.5 years ago, which was very similar in design to the PowerBook G4 released over 5.5 years ago," he told clients.

Last month we informed you about the August release of Apple's iPhone 3G by Vodafone and Airtel; sprinkled with information on gray-market availability. While it's now official that Airtel will bring the iPhone 3G to India on August 22nd, Vodafone's Chief Marketing Officer, Harit Nagpal, confirms that Vodafone too will launch the iPhone on the 22nd of this month.

Apparently some people who tried the jailbreaking software for iPhone 3G were having some trouble. And now, the iPhone Dev Team have released a new version of the iPhone 3G unlocking software.

A lot has been made of Apple's seemingly sure move to Walmart as a point of sale for the iPhone. Whether or not Apple releases an "everyman" $99 4Gb iPhone still remains to be seen, but this isn't the main point. The macro trend, if you haven't recognized it yet, is that the iPhone has gone beyond mainstream.  And the Apple brand?  Don't worry, it will be fine.  Walmart sells Coke and GE products, which are by some accounts the world's most valuable brands. They aren't suffering any dilution.

Recently the Samsung Omnia have been released in Japan, with an official name of SoftBank 930SC Omnia. Apparently there are some differences between the regular one and the Japanese style one.

The problem with other ad-blockers for Safari is that they are implemented as awful hacks: as an InputManager and/or ApplicationEnhancer. This compromises the stability of Safari and very often create problems when Apple releases a new version of Safari. GlimmerBlocker is implemented as an http proxy, so the stability of Safari isn't compromised because it doesn't use any hacks. It is even compatible with all other browsers.

Amaya is intended to be a comprehensive client environment for testing and evaluating new proposals for Web standards and formats. A large part of the intended features of Amaya are implemented in this release, but some of them are not complete yet.

AT&T released its turn-by-turn GPS application, Navigator yesterday. Stop the celebrating though, there are more than a few problems.

According to the X-Force 2008 Trend & Risk Report (PDF) released early this year, Mac OS X Server and Mac OS X top the list of operating systems with the most disclosed vulnerabilities for 2008. Each accounts for 14.3 percent, and has been in the top five in each of the last three years. Rounding out the top five were: Linux Kernel at 10.9 percent, Sun Solaris at 7.3 percent, and Microsoft Windows XP at 5.5 percent. The purpose of this data is to compare the total number of disclosed vulnerabilities with each individual operating system. Vulnerability data is submitted to the Mitre Corp. and then appears in the CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) List.
