A to G is a simple, free utility for Mac OS X that exports your Apple Address Book contacts into a Gmail-readable text file. Once exported, simply click Import in the Contacts section of your Gmail account, choose the file you exported, and you're done! A to G will bring over your contacts' phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, companies, job titles and notes so that you can have info you need wherever you have Gmail.

MacDailyNews - Apple could buy Dell outright; Mac-maker has more cash on hand than Dell... - 0 views

  •
On October 6, 1997, in response to the question of what he'd do if he was in charge of Apple Computer, Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell stood before a crowd of several thousand IT executives and answered flippantly, "What would I do? I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders." A little more than a month later, on November 10, 1997, new Apple Interim CEO (iCEO) Steve Jobs responded, speaking in front of an image of Michael Dell's bulls-eye covered face, "We're coming after you; you're in our sights."

Apple's $20 Billion Cash - 0 views

The solution to many of Apple's potential problems, the public relations disaster of indentured Chinese laborers, the threat of a disrupted delivery supply line*, and the ability of Apple to make inexpensive consumer electronics, reminiscent of Sony's heyday, well into the future is, you guessed, it, to build their own completely automated, computerized plant that can assemble these products without a human hand ever touching them. Such a plant, run by robots and Macs, would be expensive to build. In the long run, however, the economic and political advantages of such a plant would be enormous. Apple would stop sending money to China and suffering from continuing scrutiny over labor conditions in a foreign country. The plant would become a poster child for modern, 21st century manufacturing. Imagine Steve Jobs taking the next president of the United States on a tour of a plant that makes its own electricity, cleans its own water and cranks out millions of iPods and iPhones each month. And sends power back into the grid on occasion to power our plug-in hybrids.

'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says - 0 views

  • Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
  • None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

It's easy but I always forget about it...

For most users, iTunes does a great job of handling all of the details of managing your media library for you, allowing you to manage your content through iTunes itself and not having to worry too much about the underlying files and folders that make up your iTunes library.

Mac vs. PC: What You Don't Get for $699 - BusinessWeek - 0 views

Now Microsoft is fighting back with its own advertising campaign. I've enjoyed some of its elements. The Seinfeld spots were weird. I was intrigued by some of the "I'm a PC" spots that aired last fall, depicting PC users engaged in a variety of jobs-teaching law, protecting endangered species, blogging for Barack Obama. The message: You can use a Windows PC and still do cool and interesting things. Not bad. Then came the adorable little girls: Kylie, age 4, and Alexa, age 7, e-mailing pictures of fish and stitching together pictures of a fort into one. Microsoft, it seemed, had finally found its advertising voice.

My name is Charles Edge.  I recently moved from sunny Los Angeles to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it's colder on the outside but far warmer on the inside.  I enjoy spending time with my wife Lisa and daughter Emerald, and Archie the dog too.   Professionally, I am an engineer.  I consult, speak and write about my engineering endeavors but at the heart of it all I am an engineer.  I work at 318, the largest Mac Consultancy I am aware of.  At 318 I manage projects, training, engineers and many other aspects in my role as Director of IT.  I also still do a pretty decent number of fairly complicated jobs for clients and occasionally write a piece of code or somesuch, which I'll start making available on the apps page of this site.

The admin's freeware friend: DeployStudio - 0 views

  •
For individual Mac users or small businesses, it's usually not a problem deploying new Macs with a standard image -- as a Mac support specialist, you might just load each machine manually. But imagine if you need to deploy hundreds or thousands of Macs, PCs, or XServes. You'd need a small army of techs or a way to do the job automatically. That's where DeployStudio comes in handy. This freeware tool can be used to create deployment files using Netboot, external USB or FireWire drives, or any AFP, SMB, or NFS sharepoint on the network.

Allow non-administrator users to add or remove printers | Mac Admin Corner - 3 views

  •
Apple added a "feature" to Leopard which restricts non administrator users from managing printers on their Macs. While this is desired behavior on a public machine such as a classroom, it is a problem for single user machines such as faculty, staff and 1:1 deployments. By default in Leopard, a non-admin user can not add or remove printers. They are also not able to hold or resume a print job. This is a problem if you want users to be able to add printers themselves, especially if they're bringing their laptops home.

The iPad 2 wasn't the only big announcement that Apple CEO Steve Jobs and company made at the iPad 2 event in San Francisco today. In fact, they made a pretty big software unveil as well. Sadly though, this update won't be coming to the Verizon iPhone 4.
