More than ever before, employers are searching the Internet for information about potential hires. From your personal website, to your LinkedIn profile, to postings you made on an industry blog, you might be surprised by the amount of information that exists about you online. And in today's employment environment, hiring managers have become increasingly cautious about new individuals they bring on board, meaning that any red flags could carry extra weight. A bit of digital dirt that simply would have been a minor embarrassment only a few months ago might be a deal-breaker today.

Teens and college students living the party life have discovered they may have a little too much information up on their web site. De-tagging - removing your name from a Facebook photo - has become an image-saving step in the college party cycle. "The event happens, pictures are up within 12 hours, and within another 12 hours people are de-tagging," says Chris Pund, a senior at Radford University in Virginia.

U.S. moms and dads estimate that their children spend only two hours a month on the internet, but kids say they actually spend 10 times more time - or 20 hours - according to a recent study, the first Norton Online Living Report by Symantec (via MarketingCharts). 41% of respondents age 13-17 say their parents have no idea what they do online, and only 33% of parents worldwide say they set parental controls and monitor their children's online activities.
