Facebook has released an update to Messenger application for Windows Phone devices. The Facebook Messenger v5.0 brings Groups and Instating Photo sharing features.

After Micromax three more smartphone vendors in India have announced that they will pre-load the Blackberry Messenger on their Android devices.

Facebook is trying to pump up the use of its standalone Messenger application by removing chat functionality from its main app.

Facebook Messenger 5.0 update, which was earlier rolled out to iOS this week is now also available for Android devices too. The latest app update now allows the users to send images, voice messages and images in a lot easier way.

Popular instant messaging app Hike on Monday announced that it had crossed 20 million users. It claims that 5 millions of these users have started using the app in the past three months. Similar to most of the chatting apps out their like WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat, Hike also lets users exchange free instant messages to contacts across the globe.

Facebook Messenger's free calling feature was introduced in March 2013. Initially for users in the US, the feature is finally available for Indian users too. The company has quietly rolled out an update to its Android app to enable free voice calls.

BlackBerry introduced its popular messaging application, BBM for Android and iPhone devices in October last year. BlackBerry has reportedly added more than 20 million more users after its launch on the mobile platforms.

In October this year, BlackBerry introduced new Timed Messages and Message Retraction features for its BBM messaging app in beta. The company has now rolled them out publicly to its apps on iOS, Android and BlackBerry 10 platforms. The Timed Messages feature lets you specify how long your contacts have access to messages and pictures shared in a conversation.

Samsung has already confirmed its plan to trim down its smartphone portfolio next year in order to stabilise its dwindling profits. Now the Korean tech giant is reportedly planning to shut down its messenger service ChatOn in certain markets, reports Korea Times citing a Samsung official.

BlackBerry has introduced a Snapchat-like ephemeral messaging feature called Timed Messages, and a Message Retraction option for BBM.
