Wis. Senate leader: No cop would arrest Dems - chicagotribune.com - 0 views

  •
In my search for an article, this particular one popped up simply because of the keyword, "leader." As I read though it a second time though, it occurred to me that although short, this article lifts up leadership in a variety of angles. The politicians are operating out of transactional leadership, while the police agencies seem to be operating out of transformational leadership. This may seem like a stretch, but the moral high ground appears to be the focus for decision-making by the police agencies.

This book was an interesting find because while it's about leadership it is also about membership. How we act as leaders will potentially either grow or reduce membership in a congregational setting. While this may be completely apparent, it's something to look at when you're thinking of how you present yourself as a leader to a congregation.

I found this book an interesting find because I have worked a lot with youth. I found this to me useful particuarly if you were trying to form a student leadership team and training your student leaders. This book boasts that it uses fun and interactive ways to promote leadership and teach students not only the importance of leadership but how to become leaders themselves.

Communication and Leadership - 0 views

  •
This text was used as background in information in one of my communication classes in my undergraduate experience. We didn't read the whole book, just excerpts in class. Communication is something that we all do and as leaders we need to be keenly aware of how we communicate. I think good communication can motivate and energize people so that they can be the best people that they can be. As a pastor who speaks from the pulpit, I know that every little movement and word affects the message I am communicating. I feel this text can show us as leaders how we need to manage our communication.

Energy and Leadership - 0 views

  •
I am a person that focuses very much on energy and how energy can be used in your life. This text on leadership looks at how you can use energy in order to lead others and find effective leaders that help you keep the valuable energy you have in check and in focus. I think this will be useful as I am always looking for ways to energize myself and energize others in my ministry.

This book places ethics at the "heart of leadership," and provides essays written by theorists, scholars, and philosophers in order to explore issues regarding leadership and ethics. It seems like this book would provide inspiration to aspiring leaders.

Amazon.com: art of possibility by zander: Books - 0 views

he Zanders, are a team of transformational leaders that practice globally. Each chapter has a catch word- short and to the point- to be remembered easily in the heat of the moment. Two of my favorites include "Giving an A" and Rule #6. The first is an argument to give everyone an A not as an expectation to live up to but a possibility to be lived into. If you already have the A where can the freed up energy take you. Rule #6 is a reminder not to take oneself so seriously.

Mojo as defined by the author is "the moment we do something that's purposeful, powerful, and positive and the rest of the world recognizes it." This book examines where you have it and how to apply it to areas in your life where you don't so that those mojo moments are always at your fingertips. One does not need to be head of a company to benefit from this approach.

"The wisdom of the Bees" by Michael O'Malley, Penguin Group 2010 "What the hive can teach buisness about leadership effeciency and growth" is where the author takes the reader through a 25 step process utilizing the skills of bees and bee colonies to inform and guide organizations in identifying their strengths and weaknesses to create purposeful, effective and successful group norms and outcomes. It's fascinating and my choice for a review along with my second one

Hi folks....somehow this did not make it into the group blog on books to read but instead sat in my own Diigo library. It is worth taking a gander at and I am loving reading it. Galen

I loved the wisdom of bees too! This is a very good book and is inviting to a wide variety of folks. I liked that when I used it for a leadership class that I had positive feedback from both young and old, male and female and it has great insights regardless of where you are in life or business.

Rules for Radicals - 0 views

Rules for Radicals by Saul Alinsky gives guidelines for leaders who wish to implement social change. The guidelines are realistic and based in fact rather than theory. While the book was first published in 1971, I would argue that it is still applicable today, and it's an enjoyable, quick read.

UM Call to Action - 1 views

To me, this is an example of transformational leadership in the UMC. Northouse defines this as connections that raise the level of motivation and morality of a leader and follower. BBC News - Midwife shortage costing lives, says Save the Children - 0 views

This article demonstrates the power of one's life in creating motivation to change the status quo. The tradgedy of loss for this women made her determined to educate other women and to become a midwife herself. Very inspiring. There are so many midwives who fight against the establishment to preserve a women's right to birth at home or in a more natural way.

The World is Their Parish: Can the United Methodist Church survive? - 1 views

  •
Interesting column about the UMC, young pastors, new church plants and the future.
  •
Vivian, Loved this article! I have been thinking more and more about what our future looks like, what the future of worship and church community will be - obviously we need to be looking at "re-thinking" what church really is. I loved ths: "John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, was quoted as saying: "The world is my parish." He did not say "the people that show up to this particular building on a Sunday are my parish." I am feeling led to begin to vision what it looks like to see the WORLD as our parish and really stop worrying so much about the building and get out in our neighborhoods and BE church. Thanks for sharing! Sandy

News: MIT Again Reviews Status of Women - Inside Higher Ed - 0 views

  •
As someone with a day job in higher ed (and who has been a college professor) I am always very interested in how gender intersects with higher ed leadership issues - and I do think these include the professorate as well as college administrators. An overlap I note here with the Northouse chapter on gender is the article's observation that some believe that the attempt to hire women necessarily means that standards are being compromised - reminiscent (to me anyway) of the textbook's observation that male raters tend to rate male leaders as more effective than female leaders. Both the article and this aspect (and some others) of the chapter point to the continued dilemmas of sexist structures and culture, where women (and other traditionally powerless groups) are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
