PETA Asia-Pacific | The Issues | Animals Are Not Ours For Entertainment - 0 views

  • Zoos claim to educate people and preserve species, but they usually fall short on both counts. Animals' normal behavior is seldom discussed, much less observed, because their natural needs are rarely met. Even the largest of zoo enclosures cannot compare to the vastness of an animal's natural habitat, and the signs on these enclosures provide little more information than an animal's species, diet, and natural range. The only thing zoos teach people is that it is acceptable to control every aspect of an animal's life.

Should animals be kept in zoos? | | Debatewise - where great minds differ - 0 views

  • Zoos are premises for the captivity of animals, often in urban areas where many of the animals would not otherwise be found, with the intention of studying the animals and displaying them to the public at large. The predecessor of the zoo was the menagerie, which involved the captivity of birds typically for the entertainment of the aristocracy, and has a long history running back to ancient times. The first modern zoo evolved out of an aristocratic menagerie in Vienna in 1765. Many types of zoo now exist, from the petting zoos that encourage the public to get up and close with the animals to the large nature reserves that provide space for the animals to roam around within and most famously the large, urban zoos like the London Zoo which include elephants, lions and penguins and are usually notable tourist drawcards for the cities concerned. Proponents argue that zoos are beneficial both to the animals themselves, protecting endangered species with specific breeding programs, and the public, as an educational tool to increase both awareness and understanding. Opponents respond that the removal of wild animals from their habitat is wrong, that they should be left in their natural surroundings and not used as tools for public entertainment. Moons of Jupiter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • For two decades no additional moons were discovered; but between October 1999 and February 2003, researchers using sensitive ground-based detectors found and later named another 34 moons,

On 1999 to 2003 34 more moons of jupiter were discovered.
  • The moons' physical and orbital characteristics vary widely. The four Galileans are all over 3,100 kilometres (1,900 mi) in diameter; the largest Galilean, Ganymede, is the ninth largest object in the Solar System, after the Sun and seven of the planets (Ganymede being larger than Mercury). All other Jovian moons are less than 250 kilometres (160 mi) in diameter, with most barely exceeding 5 kilometres (3.1 mi). Orbital shapes range from nearly perfectly circular to highly eccentric and inclined, and many revolve in the direction opposite to Jupiter's spin (retrograde motion). Orbital periods range from seven hours (taking less time than Jupiter does to spin around its axis), to some three thousand times more (almost three Earth years).

  • Main group or Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. They are some of the largest objects in the Solar System outside the Sun and the eight planets in terms of mass and larger than any known dwarf planet, and Ganymede exceeds the planet Mercury in diameter.

Solar System Exploration: Planets: Jupiter: Rings - 0 views

  • All four giant planets in our solar system, including Jupiter, possess a system of rings. Unlike the brilliant, icy rings of Saturn, Jupiter's rings are tenuous, dusty structures. And although Saturn's iconic rings were first spied by Galileo in 1610, Jupiter's faint rings were not spied until the 1970s, when spacecraft first visited the Jupiter system.

All gas giants in our solar system have rings. Jupiter's rings aren't similar to saturn's, because they are made out of ice and jupiter's appear to be made out of dust. jupiter's rings were discovered in 1970.
  • The rings appear to be created by dust thrown off by impacts on small moons that orbit within them. The gossamer rings actually outline the orbits of the moons Amalthea and Thebe. The moons Adrastea and Metis skirt through the outer edges of the main ring.

Scientist believe that jupiter's rings were created by dust that has fallen off some of jupiter's moons by impacts.

  • Jupiter has a very faint ring system, but is totally invisible from the Earth. (The rings were discovered in 1979 by Voyager 1.) The atmosphere is very deep, perhaps comprising the whole planet, and is somewhat like the Sun. It is composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, with small amounts of methane, ammonia, water vapor and other compounds. At great depths within Jupiter, the pressure is so great that the hydrogen atoms are broken up and the electrons are freed so that the resulting atoms consist of bare protons. This produces a state in which the hydrogen becomes metallic.

JUPITER's Great Red Spot - EnchantedLearning.com - 0 views

  • Jupiter's Great Red Spot was discovered in 1664 by Robert Hooke. Part of the reason it lasts so long in comparison with Earth storms (other than the huge difference in scale and the existence of an internal heat source on Jupiter) is that this storm never goes over land; on Earth, hurricanes loses most of their energy and die when they stray over land.

Jupiter Facts - The Planet Jupiter - Jupiter For Kids - 0 views

  • Although Jupiter’s orbit, and therefore its year, is so much longer than the Earth’s, its day is much shorter.  The Earth turns on its own axis, turning away from the Sun and so giving us day and night, once every 24 hours.  Jupiter spins round much faster, turning on its axis once every 9.84 hours!

Jupiter orbits every 9 hours, while earth takes much more, jupiter's year is longer than earth's.

Fun Jupiter Facts for Kids - Amazing Information About This Big Planet - 0 views

  • Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Its famous 'Red Spot' and raging gas storms give it an impressive if not intimidating appearance. As well as having many moons, Jupiter also has a number of rings similar to that of Saturn but much less noticeable.

As well as being the largest planet in the universe jupiter has 64 moons. Jupiter has rings similar to saturn's but less visible.

  • The planet is one of the brightest objects in the night sky, and even a small telescope can reveal its multicolored stripes. These stripes are bands of clouds being pushed around the planet by strong east-west winds. Jupiter is a world of complex weather patterns. Its most prominent feature is an orange-red oval called the Great Red Spot. The oval is a storm system that has lasted at least 300 years and is bigger across than Earth and Mars combined.

Jupiter is a really bright planet. Even with a small telescope, you can see it's stripes in the night sky. The great red spot is a giant storm. Scientist believe it's lasted 300 years long.

Jupiter - Astronomy For Kids - KidsAstronomy.com - 1 views

  • If you weigh 70 pounds (32 kg) on Earth, on Jupiter you would weigh 185 pounds (84 kg). This is because Jupiter is such a large planet and so has more gravity.

If you weigh 32 pounds on earth, you would weigh 147 pounds on jupiter! That's 115 more pounds. Gravity on jupiter is harder because jupiter is such a big planet..
