Why was Jackie Robinson the greatest African-American baseball player in history? He broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball (MLB). Not only he was the first African-American baseball player, but also he was one of the best baseball players and had some of best records in history. Jackie was also a big Christian on and off the field. Jackie Robinson was a true American hero.
When he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, he loved the game. He wanted to show the people that blacks could play just as good as whites. Even though he was black, he was the best player the Brooklyn Dodgers as a rookie. He thought black people should be treated fair. Dodgers' manager, Branch Rickey (a white man), thought the same. "Mr. Rickey, you want a player who doesn't have the guts to fight back?" said Jackie. "No, I want a ballplayer that has the guts not to fight back!" said Rickey. When he did, Jackie suffered through bad things as a black baseball player. Death threats were sent to Jackie and even his son at the Dodgers' main office. Abuse to Jackie was rising like wild fire. Pitchers would through the ball at his head because of his COLOR! Fans even from the Dodgers would through food and trash at him while he was batting. "Hey do you hear me ******, this is a white mans game!" yelled Ben Chapman from the Phillies stand," He went through some bad times as a ballplayer.
Besides being the first African-American baseball player, he made some of the highest records in baseball history. Robinson had 24 steals in his rookie season. A trick that he did was to distract the pitchers and sprint to base. In his rookie season, he also made 12 home runs for the Brooklyn Dodgers. These home runs lead to the 1949 World Series. The arrival of Jackie was a huge effect on the Dodgers. His batting average was .342. You may not know a lot about that, but it is very good. There is more to Jackie besides being the first African-American baseball player in the history of America.
Jackie Robinson was also a big Christian in his career. He lived by a Biblical saying in the Bible. "He created me to glorify and worship him, only him. He built me to follow Him, just him. He died on the cross for me, just me," Jackie also prayed before every game. When he did, he always had a good game. This shows that God can do anything. He loved his kid and told him this every day; "I won't leave you like my father did. I will stay with you forever until I die," Jackie loved God so much for giving him a family, letting him walk the earth, and giving him luck before every game. This shows if you love God, you can do anything. Jackie's Christianity helped him through all of his life.
Ask yourself, would if Jackie Robinson never lived? Who would have stood up to the people about racism? Blacks would probably still be not allowed to play baseball. Jackie Robinson wasn't just one of the best players in history, he was the first black baseball player and destroyed the color barrier. When people hear the name "Jackie Robinson", they soon think of the first black to play baseball. But what they do not think of is the terrible things that he had to go through at those times. In my opinion, Jackie Robinson is one of the best baseball players in the history of America. Jackie Robinson was a true American hero.
