The number of youth and high school players in the U.S. jumped to 524,895 in 2009 from 225,925 in 2001, a 132 percent increase, according to an annual U.S. Lacrosse survey.

“Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the nation,” said Jim Reilly

“In Minnesota, there are more lacrosse players than qualified coaches or officials can handle,” Reilly said.

“Edmond Lacrosse has grown from a modest hundred kids to around 300 to 400 today. Teams start at the third and fourth grade level and go all the way up to high school. I believe the growth is from kids looking for more options outside the ‘standard’ sports. Football players are encouraged to play for training purposes,” said Klein.Since 2001, high school participation in the US has grown from about 1,750 to 3,750. Individual participation has doubled from around 75,000 to over 150,000. Both boys and girls lacrosse are currently ranked 11th in overall participation and soon expected to break into the top 10.

Look around, though, at the growing number of lacrosse nets and helmets popping up on football fields in the area and one thing is apparent — lacrosse is a sport gaining traction in area high schools. Established area programs in Jackson, Hoover, Lake and Green have been joined by new programs at Central Catholic and St. Thomas Aquinas this season. “The overall speed of the game and physical nature of the game just drew me in,” Jackson senior Cooper Merrill said. “The excitement I got from playing lacrosse was much more than the excitement I got from playing baseball.” Merrill’s comments are a common refrain from those who decide to give lacrosse a try. The different ways the game can be played also is a draw. “Lacrosse is a unique game with a lot of different styles,” Jackson junior Joshua Herold said. “You can bring your style into the game. Because it’s a new sport, a lot of new styles can really develop. Anything goes, really.”

The main reason I think it is becoming popular though is because of how new of a sport it is.

Something new and exciting, like lacrosse, has brought many young teens and young adults to realize that there are new and better sports out there.
