Imagining a sold-out stadium for a high school lacrosse match remains a dream for another day.
Look around, though, at the growing number of lacrosse nets and helmets popping up on football fields in the area and one thing is apparent — lacrosse is a sport gaining traction in area high schools.
Established area programs in Jackson, Hoover, Lake and Green have been joined by new programs at Central Catholic and St. Thomas Aquinas this season.
“The overall speed of the game and physical nature of the game just drew me in,” Jackson senior Cooper Merrill said. “The excitement I got from playing lacrosse was much more than the excitement I got from playing baseball.”
Merrill’s comments are a common refrain from those who decide to give lacrosse a try. The different ways the game can be played also is a draw.
“Lacrosse is a unique game with a lot of different styles,” Jackson junior Joshua Herold said. “You can bring your style into the game. Because it’s a new sport, a lot of new styles can really develop. Anything goes, really.”
