テクノロジ系の情報を扱うGizmodoは7月10日、iPhone 3Gの脱獄に加え、iPhone Dev TeamはiPhone 3Gを通信事業者に関係なく利用可能にするアンロックにも成功していると報じた。現時点では、iPhoneを使いたいのならば英国ではO2と、米国ではAT&Tと契約しなければならない。　しかし、iPhone Dev Teamの元メンバーであり「Geohot」の名で知られるGeorge Hotz氏はブログで、iPhone Dev TeamはiPhone 3Gのアンロックにはまだ成功していないと主張している。　Hotz氏によると、iPhone 3GはこれまでのiPhoneとは異なるブートローダーを採用しており、iPhone 3Gのブートローダーは現時点ではまだ攻略されていないという。
