With the release of iPhone Firmware 2.2.1, many were left wondering what had become of the Push notification system that Apple had announced at the Worldwide Developer's Conference back in June.

"iPhone makes for worldwide loss" reads the headline in Sunday's Guardian, whose editors apparently missed the flurry of similar pieces that appeared three weeks earlier.

I guess I was a little too optimistic. Back in April, when I tried out a TomTom GPS receiver that used a wireless-data modem to fetch traffic data, look up nearby gas prices and find local establishments, I expected that we'd soon see something better.
