  • The mapred.map.tasks and mapred.reduce.tasks properties tell how many tasks you want to run in parallel. This should be a multiple of the number of computers that you have. In our case since we are starting out with 1 computer we will have 2 map and 2 reduce tasks. Later we will increase these values as we add more nodes.

Graphd primitives (tuples) are identified by GUIDS which consist of a database id and a primitive id. In a database, primitive ids are assigned sequentially as primitives are written. For example, 9202a8c04000641f8000000000006567, is the guid which corresponds to the one known to you as "Arnold Schwarzenegger." The front part, 9202a8c04000641f8 is the database id and the back part, 6567, is the primitive id. As you might surmise based on the number of intervening zeros, we're quite ambitious. Each graphd primitive consists of:

Scripting Xalan XSL with Python - 0 views

  • I've just discovered and used an application of the Xalan extension mechanism, namely scripting XSL with Python. In hindsight, the technique seems quite trivial, but I didn't quite realize all the implications until now. Using Java methods as extensions is an alternative too, of course, but requires significantly more complicated steps in deployment, and, as Java is quite a static language, re-compiling and re-installing classes. In contrast, Python extensions are just as dynamic as, well, Python scripts in general. In the most simple scenario, one just updates the XSL stylesheet and its embedded Python functions and does nothing more. Even in the more complicated use scenarios, updating the code is rather trivial. To use Python with Xalan, you need two libraries: bsf.jar and jython.jar, Bean scripting framework and Jython implementation, respectively. There's a catch, though. The bean scripting framework was originally implemented at IBM, but was later donated to Jakarta Apache project. Now, the current distribution of BSF at Jakarta is complete, but it seems that they've changed the package names to correspond the current maintainer, org.apache.bsf etc., but recent implementations of Xalan live in the past and expect the BSFManager and BSFEngine to be in package com.ibm.bsf. So, if you just use the Jakarta's bsf.jar and standard jython.jar (and put them in the classpath), you will probably see a longish stack trace, complaining something like this:

Just Say "No" To Google - 0 views

  • Life at Google - The Microsoftie Perspective June 24th, 2007 by trixter98052 The following has been making the rounds on just about every internal email list I belong to in Microsoft. Here it is to share a little insight with the rest of the world. Microsoft is an amazingly transparent company. Google is not. Any peek is a good peek.   Many of you were asking for the feedback I received from my interview with the former Google employee I hired into ABC Development as a Sr.SDE. Here it is. This candidate is also a former MS employee who left the company and founded a “Start-up” called XYZ. XYZ was purchased by Google and he was hired on as a Senior Software Engineer II / Technical Lead. Here is his take on Google’s environment as well as areas Microsoft should consider improving in order to be more competitive.
