What does the SOPA threat mean for online education and the cloud? Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia and sixth most visited site in the world, will join websites like the content aggregator Reddit to "go dark" on Wednesday in opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its companion bill, the Protect IP Act (PIPA), which are currently being debated in Congress. "What these bills propose are new powers for the government and also for private actors to create, effectively, blacklists of sites that allegedly are engaging in some form of online infringement and then force service providers to block access to those sites," says Corynne McSherry, intellectual property director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "What we would have is a situation where the government and private actors could censor the net."

Interesting debate on freedom of expression in schools turned into a religious freedoms issue (though not about religious freedoms in my books). Guess my life has been a waste...and I'm guessing there will also be MANY "Life is wasted without..." shirts at school on Monday! I like "Life is wasted without evolution" OR "Life is wasted without gay marriage" Would that be OK? Isn't science a kind of religious freedom? And what is it with Nova Scotia youth and shirts? Anyway, hope they do a student-led forum on this one as it's loaded with teachable moments... 

The services provided by nature and the qualities that contribute to human well-being are still invisible in the marketplace. Because we have elevated economics above everything else, this is dangerous. When you have a society that largely equates the quality of life with economic indicators, such as gross domestic product, and those indicators fail to track the health of its fundamental inputs, you end up on shaky ground.
