This is an archive of political cartoons printed in Britain. It would be great for a lesson that showed multiple viewpoints and perspectives on issues and moments in history. Students can analyze them to find out the cartoonist's perspective on an idea, and what the public's reaction was to an event. I use these in class to have my students see how one country can react to the events in another, and how different areas view each other.
This is a collection of documents on law, history, and diplomacy. In World History we talk about many of these documents, so it would be interesting to have students read them and try to imagine how it felt to be a part of that event or history. For example, students can read the Balfour declaration to decide how Jews might react to it, and how Palestinians might react to it.
This is a cool website because users can manipulate the documents, create their own collections, and use the documents they collect to make a poster or movie all from one website. It is easily searchable by subject and returns a variety of document types. The technology could also fall under the AASL standards of using technology to create new ideas and products to share.
This is from the Library of Congress's main page. It is a collection of historical newspapers from 1836-1922. It would be a great source of information on what else was going on during main events, such as the civil war. It would also be a great way to show people reacted to events during that time period.
This is a collection of recordings made by various presidents between 1940 and 1973. It would be a great way for students to understand how a president thinks, how they use their power to influence others, and why they took certain actions.
This is a collection of the 100 most influential documents according to the U.S. government. It would be interesting to have students read these throughout the year, and rank them on their own list of most influential. It also helps students understand how great of an impact a document can have on a country's history.
Our district recently partnered with SHEG to provide us with these lessons and documents. On the left there are units and each one has a guide for students to use as well as copies of the documents. It provides support activities to help students understand how to use sources effectively, how to understand perspective, and how to put a primary document in context with the time period.
Searchable military records and documents regarding war, conditions during war. Great for personal diaries and experiences, and shows images of source itself. Another thing I like about this site is that you can create a memorial page for an event or war. This would be a great project for my 21st century learners!
This was presented to us in class but it was one of my favorites and so I had to bookmark it. I think it would be great for showing culture, values, what was important at the time, etc. I teach Social Studies and see myself using this in every one of my classes. It could be used to compare decades as well, and see change over time.
Primary sources dealing specifically with Nebraska. This would be a great source for bringing history ideas to Nebraska and showing how worldwide or national ideas can impact a local area
