5th graders learn about explorers in social studies and we do a research unit in media.  This site is very cool because it has actual documents that contain personal accounts by American explorers, Indians, missionaries, traders and settlers.  I love reading the actual words from these famous pioneers from long ago.  I think it gives kids something "real" to relate to when studying history.

The ipl2 website not only allows its users to access both national and international newspapers and magazines online, but it also provides its users quick and simple ways to search for materials with the click of a mouse (i.e.) for kids or teens, resources by subject, or special collections created by ipl2. The site permits researchers to search specific categories such as: art and humanities, education, law, government and political science, as well special collections for presidents and literary criticisms. The site offers a unique 24 hour a day help desk, where students and volunteer library and information science professionals provide answers to your questions via email.

This site provides a fun and interactive way for students to look at statistical information from the US government. It would help students with map skills and being able to read mathematical information (mean, median etc.) from a graph. There are links included for teachers and parents along with a link to "grown up stats" that links you to fedstats.gov.

This is a great resource for kids to explore the different ecosystems and animals that live there.

Grade level 1- 3 grade. Students may research plants and animals, people, places, history and government, world religions, science and math, sports and hobbies and arts. Science projects, games and activities engage students learning.

A science topic that is bound to grab and hold onto everyone's attention is outer space. NASA offers four versions of their student site: K-4, 5-8, 9-12, and higher education. Each version offers some basic "must-haves" for primary sources such as photo libraries, videos, and a link to NASA-TV. In addition, there are games to motivate students, career profiles (to help students see what steps are necessary if they want to become an astronaut), and "Homework Topics" to help students extend their learning. There is also a great NASA Kids Club that is available!

The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has this fun site for kids. The topics include disease, nutrition, physical activity, your body, and more. There are lots of colorful graphics and links to more information. Students can visit the game room, take the BAM challenge, or read about different stories like a newsletter. I think students would enjoy this website.

This site provides primary sources with lots of topics for research. Students can browse through historic newspapers, old photographs, film, sound recordings, and more. Some of the topics include American history, maps and geography, religion and philosophy, and sports and leisure. There are even short webcasts that are very informative.

This site allows its users to search collections that include: American memories, print and photography, historic newspapers, preforming arts, veteran's history, sound recordings, film, maps, and manuscripts. Users can access and research this information via digital collections (i.e.) podcast, websites, iTunes or they can search the library catalogs that will prompt them to do a basic search or guided search to ensure they are locating the correct information

This is a great, easy to navigate site.  It includes many aspects that would enhance our 3rd grade curriculum, such as communities, branches of the government, and how laws are made.  It puts these in an easy to read format, and if you have struggling readers or vise versa, they can read the corresponding section from a different grade level.

This is a good site for those seniors whose Senior Project topic is on environmental issues. It is a springboard for choosing a specific focal point. It would also be good for the students to use for choosing an action plan for their project. Site is also a great science site for younger kids if you choose to look at only the bullet facts provided.

This EPA site gives the reader lots of options. One can learn about information where you live, popular topics, and current environmental news. I typed my zip code and found out the air quality, water and land information, the health risks, and energy produced in my area. I also explored some of the topics such as health and safety issues. Students could use this site to approach project-based learning and inquiry projects.

Great primary source for all types of learning about money. This website has interactive games and activities that are really fun. It also has a great link for educators.

This site tells students all about the money we use every day.  There is also a teacher's section which provides lesson plan ideas.

Great website for elementary students about weather. Many activities to engage students as well as teachers.Stories and games make it a fun site to visit and learn at the same time. It also addresses one of the Nebraska State Standards for Science in 2nd grade. This primary site has a teacher guide for ideas to teach about many different kinds of weather related information.

This site has lots of information about weather. Students can learn about lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes,blizzards, and floods. There are links to safety, games, activities, stories, and more. One of the games is cloud concentration in which students click on cards to find matching clouds. The stories looked very interesting and were all about severe weather.

This site is fun, friendly and easy to navigate. Students can research a topic such as clouds. After students have read about the layers of the clouds they have the options of playing a related game or related activity that could be done in the classroom or at home. Students can learn what makes weather, do activities and learn to predict the weather.

This primary source describes the importance of the buffalo and hide painting for the Plains Indians. It is geared toward intermediate elementary students. You will find teacher information, art work and information for students to read.This would also be a good website for the Art teacher in you.

This page has wonderful resources for teachers but also a few things that children might like as well after they have learned about healthy eating and the food guide pyramid. For example, there are many resources available for teachers to print when teaching about the food guide pyramid. There is also a "blast off" game that children can play. In the game children must supply their astronaut with the right balance of foods in order to make it to the planet they are trying to reach.

This is the Simithsonian website. A person can search past, present and future exhibition displays. You can also search their encyclopedia as well as search their collections.

The Smithsonian Institution offers access to primary sources and other resources on a wide variety of topics, including military and political history. http://www.si.edu/

I think it's important not to forget the official site of the White House! Specific information can be found about past presidents, first ladies, camp David, Air Force One, etc. There is also a whitehouse site for kids. The URL for this is http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/white-house-101/

This website would be great for upper elementary or even middle school when learning about different ways to recycle and also about things that are not good for the environment. There are teacher resources as well as a game where students get to be the new city manager and help clean up the town by picking up litter and recycling. By clicking on different parts of the town they learn about harful and beneficial items. Kids do need to be able to read well to play this game which is why I think it would be best for upper elementary.
