This site provide political cartoon created by Herb Block from the last 70 years. Each political cartoon is accompanied by a description including the date published, materials used, and a description of current events. Political cartoons are a great references source to teaching history, satire, and communications.

This is an archive of political cartoons printed in Britain. It would be great for a lesson that showed multiple viewpoints and perspectives on issues and moments in history. Students can analyze them to find out the cartoonist's perspective on an idea, and what the public's reaction was to an event. I use these in class to have my students see how one country can react to the events in another, and how different areas view each other.

This site list British cartoons from 1904 to the 1990's.  Cartoons are often a mirror of the culture which they portray.  This site is excellent source for social and political history of Great Britain. This site also allows registered users to create groups of cartoons for education purposes and users can access other previously created groups. The site also provides teaching and learning tools and lessons.

This is a collection of documents on law, history, and diplomacy. In World History we talk about many of these documents, so it would be interesting to have students read them and try to imagine how it felt to be a part of that event or history. For example, students can read the Balfour declaration to decide how Jews might react to it, and how Palestinians might react to it.

This site provides digital copies of historical documents which can be searched by century or by topic. The Avalon Projects collects records in the fields of law, history, economics, politics, diplomacy and government. Records include information from the ancient civilizations to the 21st century.

I love this website for its primary sources and because they are listed by time period. It makes narrowing down a subject or selecting a time period easier for students. It also allows students to browse through different time periods if they aren't sure what topic they want to research.

This is the Simithsonian website. A person can search past, present and future exhibition displays. You can also search their encyclopedia as well as search their collections.

The Smithsonian Institution offers access to primary sources and other resources on a wide variety of topics, including military and political history. http://www.si.edu/

The Institute for Holocaust Education site provides educational resources, workshops, survivor testimony for both students and educators of all ages and all levels of learning. The site is designed to ensure appropriate, accurate, and authentic lessons/materials are provided to the students so they are able to understand the political, social, and intellectual conditions that led to the Holocaust while recognizing stereotypes, prejudice and racism. The site also provides its users with additional references (i.e.) books, web links, exhibits, and a website dedicated to the Nebraska Holocaust Memorial.

The ipl2 website not only allows its users to access both national and international newspapers and magazines online, but it also provides its users quick and simple ways to search for materials with the click of a mouse (i.e.) for kids or teens, resources by subject, or special collections created by ipl2. The site permits researchers to search specific categories such as: art and humanities, education, law, government and political science, as well special collections for presidents and literary criticisms. The site offers a unique 24 hour a day help desk, where students and volunteer library and information science professionals provide answers to your questions via email.

This is an interesting site that tries to present both sides of controversial issues. It uses journals, government documents, reports and other primary sources to present each side of the issue. Topics include education, health and medicine, politics, religion, sports, media and entertainment, money and business to name a few. This would be a great site for debate class, writing a persuasive speech, and use with current events.

For students studying World War II, this website offers cartoons from the 1940's created by Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. Copies of his original drawings or clippings from the newspapers help paint a portrait of happenings at the time in the political, military, and civilian realms. Good for students grades 5-12 for extrapolating meaning for illustrations.

Through audio files, this website is a collection of speeches in United States History from various political figures and activists . These sources give a glimpse into events and viewpoints in our history such as the Civil Rights Movement or the Challenger's disastrous flight. Middle School students will be able to listen to what was really said by that individual and what it meant for that time period.

American Rhetoric allows students to take a step into the past and feel as though they are living in a particular time period. I can imagine a class closing their eyes and listening to the powerful words of JFK in his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, or the determination in Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Transcripts of each speech are also available on the site, as well as photos that help the students visualize the speaker and the time period. Extremely motivating!

This site is maintained by George Washington University. It documents the life and career of Eleanor Roosevelt through written and audio works. The site also provides lesson and materials for classroom use. This would be an excellent resource for women studies, human rights, and the era of the Roosevelt administration.

Congress for Kids is designed for students to learn about American History and Government in an interactive way. Fifth graders focus on American Government, so this source fits right into their Social Studies standards. Students can learn about the branches of our government, citizenship, and elections. There is also a section of quizzes for students to test their knowledge of American Government.

The American Presidency Project has many documents of interest when researching our American presidents.  There are primary sources that may be of great value when studying a particular president at his time in history.  The conversations are invaluable because they give a completely true picture of what event was going on at the time.
