Virtual schools allowing students to study when they want | Local News | PE.com | South... - 0 views

  •
Virtual schools here and throughout California provide flexibility needed by child actors, musicians and serious athletes, and offer options to regular students dissatisfied with traditional classrooms. Vincent is enrolled in Capistrano Connections Academy, an Orange County charter school available in neighboring counties, including Riverside. "I get home just in time for my science live lesson," Vincent said by phone after skating practice. "I eat lunch and I start school." Several Inland districts operate their own virtual schools, including the Perris Union High School District. Lake Elsinore Unified School District will launch its online school in August. San Bernardino City Unified chartered a virtual school.

The Positive Classroom:Joy in School - 0 views

  •
"Two quotes about schooling particularly resonate with me. The first is from John Dewey's Experience and Education (1938): "What avail is it to win prescribed amounts of information about geography and history, to win the ability to read and write, if in the process the individual loses his own soul?" (p. 49). If the experience of "doing school" destroys children's spirit to learn, their sense of wonder, their curiosity about the world, and their willingness to care for the human condition, have we succeeded as educators, no matter how well our students do on standardized tests? The second quote comes from John Goodlad's A Place Called School (1984). After finding an "extraordinary sameness" in our schools, Goodlad wrote, "Boredom is a disease of epidemic proportions. … Why are our schools not places of joy?" (p. 242). Now, a generation later, if you were to ask students for a list of adjectives that describe school, I doubt that joyful would make the list. The hearts and minds of children and young adults are wide open to the wonders of learning and the fascinating complexities of life. But school still manages to turn that into a joyless experience."

How The iPad Is Transforming The Classroom [Back To School] | Cult of Mac - 1 views

  •
"During its education event in January, Apple unveiled its plans to revolutionize the K-12 classroom with the iPad, electronic textbooks, a revamped version of iTunes U that supports content for K-12 schools as well as higher education, and tools for educators to create their own digital content using iBooks Author and iTunes U. In the intervening months, schools and districts around the country have made significant investments in iPads, including the San Diego Unified School District, which invested $15 million in 26,000 iPads for its students. Those sales created a record quarter for Apple in the K-12 education market. With the back to school season upon us, it's clear that the massive iPad deployments will give Apple the opportunity to disrupt the classroom in the ways it has whole industries and, in many ways, that's a good thing."

Bring Your Own Technology Empowers Educators to Facilitate Learning - 0 views

  •
"Over the past few years, Forsyth County Schools in Georgia has been moving toward allowing students to bring their own technology to school. The district updated its acceptable use policies, beefed up its infrastructure and piloted the initiative. But the schools decide what that initiative would look like in their buildings. In all 35 schools, students can bring personal devices. In 25 schools, the initiative has permeated the buildings, and in the other 10, has made its way to some individual classes."

Back to School : Got a new interactive whiteboard? | The Whiteboard Blog - 2 views

  •
"So it's mid-August and for many teachers the new school year has begun and for others it's not too far away. Some of you will be starting at new schools and with that there's a chance that you'll be coming to terms with a new interactive whiteboard. You may already be familiar with whiteboards already, and are just starting at a school with a different brand. Either way, here's a summary of blogposts I've written in the past that hopefully will prove useful to you."

Gonski called to justify public funds for private schools - 0 views

Sure, private schools are advantaged and perhaps the government shouldn't give them money. But, for parents who already pay upwards of $25000 for school fees each year, expecting more facilities etc., who also pay tax like all other Australian, why should they not be given the same support? If the government take funding from private schools, they will increase the cost of private schools, meaning that some students will then have to go into the public system, and the extra funds will just go to supporting these students. What are your thoughts?
    • anonymous

Unfortunately, in our society money talks. And if you are paying $25G, you want to see higher quality, or at least, a low student-teacher ratio. That is, after all, what you are paying for!
    • anonymous

Maybe, instead of looking at how we can get more money (i.e. by taking it from private schools), we should be looking at spending our money more wisely!

Web 2.0 for the Under 13s crowd - 0 views

  •
"As I lamented in my last post, many of the fabulous Web tools out there are restricted to users 13 and over. This limits what Elementary/Primary schools students can access online to create content to collaborate. To save others at school some time, then, I have compiled a list of popular/well known Web tools that can and can't be used by children under 13 - 1), so we are legally covered in what we are allowing our students to use and 2), so they know what is available. Please note that generally the sites that allow for under 13s still ask for parental permission ( even Edmodo if you haven't read the Terms of Use) so a solid school user agreement is needed to use these tools. Some of the sites are not US based so are not bound by COPPA and CIPA regulations. It still requires schools to carefully check out what can be viewed on these sites to ensure they are appropriate to access."

QuadBlogging | Connecting Blogs through Quads - 0 views

"Imagine four schools that had a partnership/agreement that would mean that for a four week cycle, each school's blog would be the focus for one week out of four. Each school in the Quad would spend some time visiting the blog of the school for that week, leave comments etc. After that week, another one of the four schools would be the focus and this would be repeated for the four week cycle and then repeated."

10 Ways to ensure that this year parents won't even have to ask "What did you do at sch... - 1 views

  •
"Here are 10 ideas I have gathered this summer to kick parent communication up to the next level so that never again will they have to ask, "What'd you do at school today?" and hear the annoying, "nothing." Instead, parents will have already experienced the wonderful things that have been happening in their child's world and dinner table discussions will turn into celebrations and extensions of the learning happening at school."

Beyond Blocking: Social Media Schools - Edudemic - 2 views

  •
"While the first instinct in schools and districts is often to block services such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and even some blogging platforms, the positives of these tools often outweigh the negatives. When used well, social media tools connect all stakeholders in a school community in a ways that have never before been possible. "

10 Real-World BYOD Classrooms (And Whether It's Worked Or Not) | Edudemic - 1 views

  •
"With budgets tight, many schools are hoping to bring technology into the classroom without having to shell out for a device for each student. A solution for many has been to make classes BYOD (short for "bring your own device"), which allows students to bring laptops, tablets, and smartphones from home and to use them in the classroom and share them with other students. It's a promising idea, especially for schools that don't have big tech budgets, but it has met with some criticism from those who don't think that it's a viable long-term or truly budget-conscious decision. Whether that's the case is yet to be seen, but these stories of schools that have tried out BYOD programs seem to be largely positive, allowing educators and students to embrace technology in learning regardless of the limited resources they may have at hand."

How Blogging Can Help Reluctant Writers - Edudemic - Edudemic - 0 views

  •
"Blogging is an excellent way of motivating students to develop a lifelong love of learning. Writing is a process, and when they learn this they will be able to apply the skills to other aspects of their schooling. It also teaches children critical thinking skills which will help them as they progress through school. Along with the development of critical thinking skills, students will learn how to conduct research. This is particularly important both in school and in the workplace they will one day take part in."

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum - 0 views

  •
"So how are we doing on the push to teach "digital literacy" across the K12 school spectrum? From my perspective as a school-based technology coach and history teacher, I'd say not as well as we might wish - in part because our traditional approach to curriculum and instruction wants to sort everything into its place. Digital literacy is defined as "the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate, and create information using a range of digital technologies." Many educational and business professional cite is as a critical 21st century skill. Even so, many schools have struggled to adapt it into their curriculum."

"A new Iowa Future video, "Iowa, Did You Know?," highlights the drastic changes occurring in Iowa and the world, and shows that schools are struggling to keep up in today's dynamic new global environment. The video premiered at this week's School Administrators of Iowa Conference. This fast-paced video emphasizes the magnitude of the challenges ahead, the need for Iowans to support the changes that schools must make if our learners are to be career, college, and citizenship ready, and the imperative to do this now, rather than later."

Why social media in school? | edSocialMedia - 0 views

  •
"Why social media in school? It's a good question and one many schools are asking. Whether is because of the free-flowing nature of the content and material or the potential for distraction sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube many others are being blocked by institutions. It is my belief however that by blocking these sites and not embracing what they have to offer we are only creating and arms race with our students and missing out on using these tools to connected with and provide new learning opportunities for our students."

Why Twitter could hold the secret to better #CPD | tesconnect - 0 views

  •
"Get your hashtags ready: Twitter is a far more effective source of CPD than more traditional approaches, research has found. Indeed, teachers believe they derive more from the 140 characters of a tweet than they do from several hours of seminars or lectures. Academics from two US universities surveyed 755 members of school staff about Twitter. They found that the most popular use of the social media website was for CPD, with many praising Twitter's advantages over more traditional methods. Twitter, many teachers told researchers, allowed them to create a virtual staffroom, filled entirely with their own choice of colleagues. Indeed, a middle school English teacher explained: "I have learned so much from other teachers. It has transformed my teaching. And this is my 18th year [in the profession].""
