Employees of locally based steel mill (Tonghua Steel Group) demonstrated against their merger with Beijing based firm, JIanlong Steel, which would get 65% of new company. They complained of mismanagement when Jianlong took over the company temporarily last year and about the US $438,000 salary of Jianlong's manager (Chen) compared to their pensions of about UD $29 a month. This was a violent protest. Chen was killed, and about 100,000 people were injured. Beijing wants to consolidate its steel industry to make big companies more capable of competing in the world market, running over the little people in the process.
