Past Sites of Week - JASON Project launches free energy curriculum - 1 views

  •
"A new science curriculum unit from The JASON Project enables students to explore one of society's most important issues -- energy --in a new distribution format featuring print-on-demand and other solutions for 21st-century classrooms. "Operation: Infinite Potential" is the third unit in JASON's new line of science curricula, following units on ecology and weather. Each unit fully integrates digital and print content in an inquiry-based approach to instruction. Using research articles, hands-on labs, field assignments, videos, computer games, and other multimedia, students work with leading scientists to investigate and analyze emerging technologies designed to meet the needs of an energy-hungry planet. And for the first time, JASON is allowing free downloading and printing of all online Student and Teacher Editions in the new curriculum."

Illuminations: Mars Earth Orbit - Model - 0 views

  •
This model uses circular orbits to approximate the paths of Mars and Earth. It uses 3:2 as the ratio of their orbital radii (the actual is about 1.524:1), and it uses a ratio of 2:1 as the ratio of the time it takes them to complete one revolution about the sun (the actual is about 1.881:1). It also assumes that the orbits of both planets are circular with the Sun as the center, although this is not the case; in actuality, the orbits are ellipses, and the Sun is one of the foci. However, these approximations are close to the actual data, and they allow for the development of a polar equation (5 ‑ 4cosθ) that produces a perfect limaçon. A representation that uses a better approximation of the actual data will not result in such a nice curve.

"NASA Images" is a service of the Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library. It was created under a Space Act agreement to offer unprecedented access to NASA media (including images, video, and audio), functioning as a free online library for all of NASA's multimedia content. Users can search for material by keyword or theme (such as Earth, Astronauts, Solar System, or Universe), or they can browse through several featured collections. The site is constantly growing with the addition of current media from NASA, as well as newly digitized media from the archives of the NASA Centers.
