Not much happens in “The Sisters,” the first story in James Joyce’s Dubliners. Some of the meaning in the story comes from descriptions of the light in and around the house where the town’s old priest, Father Flynn’s body lies. Other meanings come through the characters’ memories of the priest, expressed through incomplete dialog and longer reveries by the narrator. Additional meanings can be surmised from the vocabulary, some of the specific words Joyce uses in the story, “like the word gnomon in the Euclid and the word simony in the Catechism.”

Autistic Children - 0 views

I am learning more about autistic children right now, and in particular what I'm wonder is why is there a sudden raise in such case. How is it that more and more children are becoming diagnosed at a much younger age? What is causing this? I was researching this question online, and this blog that I found in Kid Glue called "Autism Now Affects 1 in 100 Children" caught my attention because that shows that autism is affecting more and more children each year. I decided to choose this to read because I'm currently reading a book called "The curious incident of the dog in the night" and it is written first person by an autistic boy named Christopher. Reading the book really sparked my interest in learning about autism and how it affects not just children, but people in general. "Disorders like this are very bothersome to me. I have a friend whose son is Autistic and it is very challenging." This was a quote that I found from the article. I chose this quote because it shows us how challenging it really is to be around an autistic person. People with autism have to be dealt with care and patience. I recommend this article because you can learn a thing or to if you ever come across a person whose diagnosed with autism. -
-
I like that you are making connections between your research inquiry and the book you are reading. Do you personally know anybody who is autistic?

The idea of looking for meaning in the descriptions of the light came to me pretty quickly. Then I realized that I could find other aspects of the story where meanings come through: characters' dialog and internal monologue of the narrator; and in the use of language. I started to see that this initial paragraph could make my whole argument in short hand. Then I would develop these themes in the remainder of the writing.

This essay began as a set of notes that I put on a Book Glutton version of Dubliners. I'm reading there this summer to see how it works. Then I copied the notes into a Google Doc, and I organized them and re-wrote them into this essay. With this essay I'm trying to figure out what I mean when I ask students to create a close reading of a text. What exactly are we asking students to do? We're not asking them to do research. Instead we are asking them to "use the language of the literature" (as an MIT professor put it in her syllabus ) n their own analysis of the particular, representative and evocatve sections of the text.

The narrator, a young man is introduced in the first paragraph as someone on vacation. He has had some sort of relationship with the man who at that point lies paralyzed inside his house after he has had his third stroke. It’s night when the story starts and the narrator is out for his regular evening walk. The narrator doesn’t feel invited into outside the house, but he also has a morbid attraction to what is happening with the man who has had the stroke.
-
This paragraph was a slight revision from the note I posted on the first paragraph on Book Glutton. I like the way this paragraph follows the arc of the story, not revealing much about the story beyond what we know in the first paragraph. It tries to explain the meanings we can gather from the descriptions that Joyce give us in that first paragraph.

I took a gander at this quote. The immigrant said that he loves his town, and his friends and he would like to stay in mexico. This is perfectly understandable. America makes it seem as though once your in,there is nothing else. There was nothing before and there wont be anything after. There are countries of equal significance or even more. All we have to do is look a bit further and we will see the truth.

I had no idea so many people legally crossed the borders in one day. I always thought by the stereotypical way people always talked about it, that only illegal immigrants could come in because it was so difficult for people to do it legally. -
Wow, 40000 to 50000 people a day during peak time along just to cross the border for work is more than said for. I can imagine a line of cars waiting to get through the border every morning and evening. Like an never ending line of people, thirsty, hungry and exhausted.

Early examples of attempts to capture the phenomenon of motion drawing can be found in paleolithic cave paintings, where animals are depicted with multiple legs in superimposed positions, clearly attempting to convey the perception of motion.

The phenakistoscope, praxinoscope, as well as the common flip book were early popular animation devices invented during the 1800s, while a Chinese zoetrope-type device was invented already in 180 AD.[3][4][5][6] These devices produced movement from sequential drawings using technological means, but animation did not really develop much further until the advent of cinematography.

First Impressions Count When Making Personality Judgments - US News and World Report - 1 views
-
"In an age dominated by social media where personal photographs are ubiquitous, it becomes important to understand the ways personality is communicated via our appearance." I think it's pretty true that our appearance may reflect our personality. For example, if someone appears very neat and healthy and always smiles warmly, he must be very confident; if someone appears very untidy, I bet this person is very lazy. As we shouldn't judge a book by the cover, it's hard to absolutely tell a person's characteristics based on his appearance. Yet first impression is always very important because we are just used to remembering and judging by what comes into our vision first.

Why Do People Like Horror Movies? They Enjoy Being Scared - 0 views
-
I came across another piece of information a couple of days later which dealt with more theories of why people love to watch horror films. This news article titled "Why Do People Love Horror Movies? They Enjoyed Being Scared" by ScienceDaily states that new research suggests "horror movie viewers are happy to be unhappy." Investigators generally use one of two theories to explain why people like horror movies. The first is that the person is not actually afraid, but excited by the movie. The second explanation is that they are willing to endure the terror in order to enjoy a euphoric sense of relief at the end. However researchers Eduardo Andrade and Joel B. Cohen have argued that those two theories are incorrect. Horror movie viewers are happy to unhappy because in their book, their "novel approach to emotion reveals that people experience both negative and positive emotions simultaneously -- people may actually enjoy being scared, not just relief when the threat is removed. As the authors put it, "the most pleasant moments of a particular event may also be the most fearful."

Perhaps We All Have Multiple Personality Disorder - 0 views
-
I'm learning more about multiple personality right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is what cause multiple personality and is there a way to over come multiple personality disorder. I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because the blog post was about this book"Switching Time" by Dr. Richard Baer. The book is about a girl who has multiple personality disorder, she had 17 personalities. People who suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder or MPD, have normally suffered something tragic in their lives that cause them to split mentally in order to protect themselves. Don't we all do that when we are in stressful situations? We become someone who we aren't, sometimes only momentarily, but for a brief moment we don't even recognize ourselves. The difference is we are aware of this behavior when it happens, but what if we were suddenly forced into extreme situations repeatedly - how would we handle it? The quote I chose here is basically saying that MPD happens to people that go through something tragic in their lives. And to protect themselves their mind splits. It also says how we all do that sometimes but the difference is we know it and MPD patients don' t. When we change that's intentionally but MPD patients don't get a choice they just have it and they have to deal with the disorder.

Cunningham, 80, whose innovative choreography has been expanding audiences' expectations about dance for more than 50 years, is reticent about connecting the dots. "The only relationship between the virtual and real dancers is the one you make for yourself," he says, comparing the experience of watching Biped to channel surfing. But that may be precisely the point, according to Roger Copeland, author of an upcoming book on the choreographer. Copeland believes that Biped, like much of Cunningham's recent work, is about how to focus your attention in a world full of distractions. "It's a model for a very progressive society, where different components are able to exist side by side without encroaching on one another." That may sound like a pipe dream, but in Cunningham's inspired rendition, it's an irresistible one.

i agree with you,the game will following the real holiday and create some activitly or quest about the holiday. -
Yea, I think when there's events like these, people get drawn in because they get rare items or whatever -
I think that this is giving people a excuse to be anti social and have no life why talk to real people or go outside when there is a whole vertual reality the mirrors the real world. -
I agree too. holidays always makes pepole happy and when there favorite holidays are in the game its more interesting. -

But isn't one of the main attractions of video games to put people in an alternate world? I, in fact, don't think the game is very realistic. The whole idea of fantasy is what is so different from real world. I think that's what is most appealing.

As well as banding together to form groups, players can also band together to form guilds. These structures allow players several benefits, such as easier communication and an identifying guild name and tabard. Guild members can also be given access to a central pool of resources known as a guild bank.[13] Guilds can also make use of an in-game calendar, allowing guild members to view scheduled events, and respond to them with whether they can attend or not. This calendar can also be accessed without need to log-in to the game, using the Armory feature.[14]

I know!! That's the worst. You just want to give up halfway but if you do complete it, you get something good out of it. -
Dont quests get boring after a period of time? The game designers or whatever you call them must come up with a lot of ideas if the quests are never ending.

However, most players prefer to use Ventrilo or Teamspeak, as they come with more customizable features and provide better sound quality than the voice service in-game.

Each student is uniquely different and learns in a variety of different way. So you will find that many of the top tier private preschools and child care centers will recognize this on a daily basis. Many of these best schools will let each child learn at their own pace and steer them into smaller groups for learning. The student will do more reading if it is shown that they have more advancement in linguistic stimulation. I'm learning more about Howard Gardner right now and in particular what I am wondering now is: What made him want to write about these eight intelligences?I was researching this question online and this blog post caught my attention because the background is very eyecatching and the summary was very vague but I thought about it and I figured out what the writer had meant. The quote I chose was basiacally the answer to my question because it states the reason that he wrote the book with those learning styles, he says that the best schools focus on your individual talents so you succeed in your life to your best ability
