Three teens who told Walterboro Public Safety officers they were kidnapped at gunpoint and almost sexually assaulted made up the story to avoid getting in trouble, officers say. According to an incident report, three female teens claimed they were kidnapped at gunpoint by four suspects from Edisto Terrace Apartments around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 22. The girls, aged 13, 13, and 15, said the suspects tried to rape one of them, but she was able to fight them off. The girls said they were later forced out of the suspects' car at Wal-Mart. Officers say they noticed inconsistencies in the girls' statements after reviewing video from Edisto Terrace and Wal-Mart. The girls were re-interviewed, where officers say they admitted to making up the kidnapping and rape allegations to avoid getting in trouble. All three girls were charged with filing a false police report.

On July 12, when he walked out of the Winnebago County Jail a free man for the first time in more than 20 years, Joseph Frey had no money, no identification and nowhere to live. Frey, 54, was wrongfully convicted in 1994 of sexual assault and kidnapping, crimes for which he was serving a 102-year sentence. When he was released earlier this month, Frey had less than a week's supply of the dozen or so drugs he needs for a degenerative bone disease, blood clots and other health problems. He can't afford more medication nor the required follow-up visits to the doctor. "I'm transient," said Frey, who is staying at the homeless shelter at Grace Episcopal Church in Madison. "I have no health coverage. Nothing."

CONYERS - Conyers police have pressed charges against a woman accused of making a false sexual assault report, authorities said. Amanda Little, 26, of Oxford, initially told police that she was kidnapped while walking in the parking lot of the Walmart at about 1 a.m. on Dogwood Drive on June 24, investigators said. Little said she was taken to an undisclosed location and sexually assaulted, said police. Upon further investigation, and after reviewing video from the Walmart parking lot, police said Little's story simply didn't add up. She later admitted to detectives that she lied and told them that she had been having sex at another location when her cell phone, which was in her back pocket, accidentally dialed the number of her boyfriend's friend and left a voicemail recording, police said. Little said she came up with the abduction story as a cover up, investigators said.

Authorities arrested Kristin Milligan, 54, after police said she made false reports about being raped and sparked an emergency response from the Austin Police Department Friday. A couple of police officers responded to Sixth Street and Congress Avenue about a disturbance in progress at 8:15 p.m., after Milligan reportedly called to say there was a male on the scene who had kidnapped and held her captive for five days. Milligan allegedly told the operator he had fled the scene but said she could see him assaulting another female at the moment. Police found the suspect matching the caller's description at a bus stop a block away , where the man told police Milligan approached him at Sixth Street and Congress Avenue and said she would call 911 to report he had raped her if he did not get her a beer.

A Myrtle Beach woman was ordered to serve five years on probation for filing false police report regarding a sexual assault in February 2010, according to police. Janelle Martinez, 24, pleaded guilty June 10 of this year to filing a false police report and was sentenced to five years in prison, but that sentence was suspended upon her service of five years on probation, according to Myrtle Beach police. Officers were called February 6, 2010 by Martinez who said she was the victim of a kidnapping and sexual assault by three men in a hotel room at the Patricia Grand Resort, according to a police report. Martinez told police the men held her down while one of them sexually assaulted her. On the day before Thanksgiving in 2004, a 16-year-old girl walking to a friend's house on Buena Vista Avenue in Lemon Grove was sexually assaulted by a man who dragged her into the bushes near the Highway 94 underpass. She smashed his face with a CD player, fled to a passer-by's car and called the police. Although she was unable to provide enough details for a composite sketch, she described a truck with a camper shell she believed her attacker was driving. When a similar vehicle was spotted in Oceanside, the trail led detectives to Uriah Courtney, a 25-year-old construction worker from North Park. His picture was put in a photo lineup, and the victim, although not completely sure, picked him out. So did another witness from the crime scene. Courtney was arrested. The main evidence against him at trial was the eyewitness testimony. He was convicted of kidnapping and rape and sentenced to life. He told the victim in court he didn't do it and said he hoped the truth one day would come out.

SAN DIEGO - Even though he spent the past eight years in prison, wrongly convicted of kidnapping and raping a teenager in Lemon Grove, Uriah Courtney is considered among the lucky ones. Lucky, because his case caught the attention of the California Innocence Project. Lucky, because evidence in the sexual assault still existed to be retested for DNA. And lucky, because he is one of the few to actually have his conviction overturned, said California Western School of Law professor Justin Brooks, who oversees the Innocence Project. Courtney, 33, was released from Donovan State Prison on May 6 after new tests showed DNA from the victim's clothing matched another felon who lived in the area of the attack.

A former Chicago Police sergeant whose rape conviction was overturned in 2011 has filed a lawsuit against the woman who accused him. John Herman filed the suit in Cook County Circuit Court Friday, claiming that the woman falsely accused him to get money from the city. The woman had sued the city in federal court and received a $1.5 million dollar legal settlement, the Sun-Times reported at the time of the 2011 Illinois Appellate Court decision that overturned Herman's conviction. According to the suit, Herman had consensual sex with the woman in her apartment on March 9, 2004. She later accused Herman of kidnapping her, driving to her apartment and forcing her to have sex with him at gunpoint, the Sun-Times reported. Herman is claiming that the woman's accusations and the resulting prosecution caused him to lose his job, damaged his reputation and caused him to serve four years in prison. Herman was convicted of rape and sentenced to 25 years in prison, but the Illinois Appellate Court overturned the conviction on October 2, 2011, according to the suit. The three-count suit charges the woman with malicious prosecution, abuse of process and defamation and asks for more than $100,000 in damages.

A woman who repeatedly accused her ex-boyfriends of raping her was today jailed after escaping justice for nearly a decade. Leanne Black made false rape claims against five different men over a period of eight years, but escaped justice until now. The 32-year-old used the rape allegations to get revenge on her partners after arguing with them - but a judge accused her of harming genuine rape victims with her lies. Black was sentenced to two years in prison at Newport Crown Court after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice. In one case, she told police that her ex had drugged and raped her, and in another she claimed that a boyfriend had kidnapped her before violently abusing her. The innocent men could have faced up to five years in jail if they had been found guilty of raping her.
