Prior to the late 1880s, Chickasaw was the dominant language in Chickasaw Nation, in the southern part of central Oklahoma, yet today, only 65 fluent speakers, all bilingual in Chickasaw and English, remain. The death of Emily Johnson Dickerson, the last monolingual Chickasaw speaker, in December 2013 has spurred reflection on the erosion and future of this endangered language.

Some terms of endearment can be used in many languages - "baby", "angel" and "sweetheart" for example. But some don't travel as well as you might think. If you call a French person "honey" ("miel") he or she may take it as a unflattering comparison with a sticky mess. China has sharply scaled back, and restricted, the teaching of languages spoken by ethnic minorities in its vast western regions in recent years, promoting instruction in Chinese instead as part of a broad push to encourage the assimilation of Tibetans, Uighurs and other ethnic minorities into the dominant ethnic Han culture. The Education Ministry says a goal is to "make sure that minority students master and use the basic common language." And some parents have welcomed the new emphasis on teaching Chinese because they believe it will better prepare their children to compete for jobs in the Chinese economy and for places at Chinese universities. But the new measures have also stirred anxiety and fueled resentment, with residents arguing that they threaten the survival of ethnic identities and traditions already under pressure by migration, economic change and the repressive policies of a government fearful of ethnic separatism.

English has spread across the world quickly, and is becoming a dominant language. The idea of World English, or Globish, has been around for a long time, but now it is becoming a reality. Globish is a simplified version of english that could possibly be a global second language.

Top universities in China are beginning to drop the English requirement test. This shows that English in losing its dominance internationally and Chinese may indeed be the language of the future.

"[New research] is suggesting that atypical brain function is a fundamental aspect of speech production tasks for adults who stutter. ... "Now because many speech areas are interconnected across the two hemispheres through the corpus callosum, it might suggest that hemispheric dominance for speech and language has not been established to the same degree as it has been for normally fluent adults." ... Loucks then used functional magnetic resonance imaging of brain activity to study participants who stutter and found that even brief, simple speech tasks - such as producing a single word to name a picture - is associated with altered functional activity."

Dozens of countries, representing a wide range of languages, vie for the Eurovision song contest every year, but English has been by far the most dominant tongue, with 26 victories. So this year, Spain, which has not won since 1969, decided: If you can't beat them, join them. Spain's Eurovision entry will be sung entirely in English. This has sparked debate between people who embrace English as the language that will relate to more people and those who want Spain's entry to represent Spanish language and culture.

Three separate experiments were conducted which all showed that individuals in the open body position took more action than those who were constricted. "Going into the research, we figured role would make a big difference. Many people experience moments of which certain words are "On the tip of their tongue." This is actually quite common and caused by the meaning of words, and the words themselves being stored in different areas of the brain. Bilingual people are found to experience this twice as much, especially with the less dominant language.

This article is interesting. It makes me theorize that birds can speak different languages, like how humans can be bilingual, trilingual, etc. I don't think animals can really understand each other, but they learn to do so in their hostile environment. My questions is this: humans are animals, so why can't we understand other animal's language like how, the video we watched in class claimed/Mrs. Stewart said, one species can understand the calls of other species? My answer is simply because we don't have to. Our environment doesn't force us to really pay attention to the signs and warnings of calls and such of predators because we are the dominant animals.

Our brains are developed with two distinct groups, the left and right hemispheres, that think in two very different manners. The left brain processes information rationally, sequentially, and logically and uses language, while the right hemisphere processes information randomly and holistically, and uses visuals more. We as humans have a dominant side of the brain which we prefer to use, and by catering to this dominant side (e.g. learning through listening for the left side, and learning through visuals for the right), we are able to learn more and understand more easily. We are not able to survive by only using one side of our brain, and it is necessary to use both and train both.

The dialect once dominated this community in southeastern Missouri, but due to stigmatization, is dying out. Pawpaw French - named after a local fruit-bearing tree - is a linguistic bridge that melds a Canadian French accent with a Louisiana French vocabulary.

Author Sena Moore writes about how music can re-wire our brains for speech. Singing and speaking activate similar areas on both sides of the brain, primarily in the motor production and sensory feedback areas. Singing, however, also activates the right hemisphere in some areas more strongly than the left. Speech is a left-hemisphere-dominate function. In other words, similar networks in the brain associated with vocal production are activated when a person is singing and when s/he is speaking. And the "stronger right hemisphere" activation supports the clinical observation that those who cannot speak because of damage to the left hemisphere speech areas known as Broca's area can still produce words by singing them.

The article talks about the history drag and LGBTQ+ slang and the double-edged sword of the language becoming mainstream. It's interesting how many subcultures such as African American and Latinx cultures contributed to what drag is today.
