Vaginal atrophy, also known as atrophic vaginitis, is an extremely common problem in menopausal women, characterized by dryness, thinning of the vaginal walls, inflammation, pain and discomfort. Vaginal atrophy is typically caused when estrogen levels decrease, usually before or during menopause, but women can also experience vaginal atrophy while breastfeeding, taking birth control pills or on a hormone therapy regimen.
