Last week one of my colleagues asked if I knew of "any good websites" for space science lessons. I said of course I did and gave the suggestion to turn on the moon view in Google Earth. This post was prompted by that 90 second conversation. Here are eight (for the eight planets) good resources for space science lessons.

Knowledge Bank Online Events is a program of online learning and professional development organised around a free online meeting space in Elluminate. The Elluminate online room is a permanently open, free, bookable space for meeting, learning and collaboration. Activities in Elluminate are live and interactive - you use your own computer to listen, speak to others and participate in activities.

Hypertextopia is a space where you can read and write stories for the internet. On the surface, it looks like a mind-map, but it embeds a word-processor, and allows you to publish your stories like a blog. It's designed to facilitate the writing of axial hypertexts by making a distinction between the fragments (essential elements) and the shards (minor, but enriching elements) of a story. You write in Hypertextopia by dragging the fragment arrow (the large one) or the shard arrow (the small one) and dropping them onto other fragments and shards, or onto empty space.

Online notice boards are a neat way of getting a shared space to collect ideas from your class for a brainstorm. Or for a teacher to post resources for a topic. Students could ask questions about a topic which you (or each other) can then answer. I've gotten several emails after my last post and they all ended with the same line, "Where do I start?" It can be overwhelming to start by Googling "makerspace." What do you most often see? That stark modern space with expensive 3d printers. But that? It's not the reality of what making in the classroom can be. I know the constraints faced by many of us in education, and I've lived them before.
