An awesome collection of rubrics by Kathy Schrock at Discovery Education.

Now that we are using the Internet in the classroom to support instruction, it is important the area of assessment be addressed. One usable method for teachers is to provide a rubric for student use and for both formative and summative assessment purposes. Another is to provide some type of graphic organizer. Below you will find a collection of assessment rubrics and graphic organizers that may be helpful to you as you design your own. Let me know if you have one you would like to share! A book dealing with both the theoretical and practical design of rubrics is the ASCD publication, Assessing Student Outcomes: Performance Assessment Using the Dimensions of Learning Model.

"Formative assessment is increasingly seen as underpinning effective teaching and learning. In this programme, Paul Black and Chris Harrison, authors of the influential pamphlet Working Inside the Black Box, outline what they see as the key features of formative assessment. They focus on effective questioning, peer and self-assessment, feedback and marking. At Lord Williams School in Oxfordshire, maths teacher Karen Vear and science teacher Jon Ryder helped Paul and Chris with their initial research."

The 2007 PSSA Reading, Mathematics, and Writing Item and Scoring Samplers are tools to assist you with your instructional program and the reading, mathematics, and writing assessments. The samplers include test items written to focus on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for writing and the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchor Content Standards (Assessment Anchors) for reading and mathematics. The items in the samplers will not appear on any operational form of the 2007 PSSA: however, they do provide examples of the types of items that will appear on the 2007 reading, mathematics, and writing assessments.

Assessment is a huge topic that encompasses everything from statewide accountability tests to district benchmark or interim tests to everyday classroom tests. 3 In order to grapple with what seems to be an over use of testing, educators should frame their view of testing as assessment and that assessment is information. The more information we have about students, the clearer the picture we have about achievement or where gaps may occur.

Question stems can be a powerful part of that process no matter where the learner is. Assessment (pre-assessment, self-assessment, formative and summative assessment), prompting and cueing during discussion, etc. In that light, the following 25+ question stems framed around the early, non-revised Bloom's Taxonomy are worth a gander.

Then, using mind mapping, she collaborates with her class to develop success criteria. Her pupils are given responsibility for their own learning. They work in small groups or pairs and choose their own resources. They often leave the classroom to use the library and ICT suite. "

In this workshop she was presenting an idea to help elementary teachers develop science fair project-a mini-science fair poster. This idea involved the used of a trifolded piece of 11″ x 17″ paper. The teachers were inputting their "required" science fair heading with post-it notes. Revision was a breeze. The teachers learned the importance of brevity with completion. They added graphs and images by gluing their graph to a small post-it. It was all so tidy, so elegant, so inviting, I probably stared a little long, struck dumb by the simplicity of the mini-poster. Once I came to my senses I realized that the mini-poster was my answer-a way to incorporate authentic peer review, formative assessment in my science classes.
