The Power of Two: A Study of the Integrated Reading Method of Peer Tutoring

Reading buddies is a program in which two or more individuals read together. For example, older students can read with younger students, and volunteers from the community can read with students of all ages. A Reading Buddies program can help model good reading. As with any skill, reading needs to be practiced on a regular basis, and with this practice as well as modeling, students can improve their skills.

Reading Buddies provides all materials necessary to set up a reading program for teenage volunteers to read one-on-one with primary school students. It includes concrete tips, techniques and ideas to help schools implement a tutoring program, including how to select, train and support high school volunteers.

In Reading Buddies, we match volunteer high school students (and middle school students in Avon) with children in grades 1-3 for a 1 hour reading time once per week.

Here's the best-kept secret about reading buddy programs: The teens who saunter into a room wary of reading to some restless youngster, typically end up gaining as much as their "little reading buddy." They gain self-confidence, reading skills, academic growth and a new desire to read. Why? Because they thrive on having someone look up to them, and they're able to read easy books that boost their own confidence; sometimes backing up to an easy book is just what a struggling pre-teen or teen reader needs, but won't do on his own.

Paired reading is a research-based fluency strategy used with readers who lack fluency. In this strategy, students read aloud to each other. When using partners, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or children who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already read. Paired reading can be used with any book, taking turns reading by sentence, paragraph, page or chapter.
