The reading gap in primary school between the lowest socio-economic students (SES) and the highest SES is equivalent to almost 3 yrs of schooling1 The literacy foundations built by children during their primary and early secondary years are crucial to their ability to do well at school. Research identifies a clear link between the development of cognitive skills such as literacy and numeracy at an early age and higher levels of education achievement, greater employability, higher earnings and greater social participation.

This thesis reports on a study of the effects of a two-tiered Buddy Reading Programme on the reading skills of 12 to 14 year old middle school students in a high-poverty urban school in a Midwestern United States school. The research took place during one school year with white and African American students.

Many teachers are concerned about the numbers of elementary children who struggle with reading. Such concerns are warranted. Studies indicate that when students get off to a poor start in reading, they rarely catch up. Struggling readers encounter negative consequences: grade retention, assignment to special education classrooms, or participation in long-term remedial services.

Book Buddies: Building Better Reading Attitudes

As I embarked on my journey of Buddy Reading with my freshmen class I have had to answer the question of why, my answer is this, why not! My freshmen class is a small class, about 50 students in two different class periods, many are great readers, others struggle - especially with their fluency. I had heard about Buddy Reading before and thought what a great thing to try. My students will hopefully become more confident and fluent readers and the pre-K students will get to hear stories on a regular basis as well as make social connections with a variety of older students.

Partner Reading is a cooperative learning strategy in which two students work together to read an assigned text. This strategy is often used as part of the Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS). PALS is a classwide peer tutoring program in which teachers carefully partner a student with a classmate. The Partner Reading strategy allows students to take turns reading and provide each other with feedback as a way to monitor comprehension.

A well-run paired reading scheme can have massive benefits, for the tutor and the tutee, as well as the school community in general. We've put together a suite of resources to support the setting up and running of a buddy reading scheme in school, including a guidance toolkit, pupil prompt cards and case studies from other schools that have run successful schemes:

Paired reading exercises are used to build children's reading comprehension and language skills. Researchers and teachers using the partner strategy typically pair more fluent readers with less fluent readers, or pair children who read on similar levels together.

This study investigated the blending of a cross-age reading buddies program with high-quality, culturally relevant children's literature as a means of maximizing educational improvement of children in an under-resourced school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Using descriptive, mixed-method research, the study explored the effectiveness of the program on children's English language use, motivation, and active learning.

In this strategy, students read aloud to each other, pairing more fluent readers with less fluent readers. Likewise, this strategy can be used to pair older students with younger students to create "reading buddies." Additionally, children who read at the same level can be paired to reread a text that they have already read, for continued understanding and fluency work. This research-based strategy can be used with any book or text in a variety of content areas, and can be implemented in a variety of ways.

This research examines the Reading Buddies program at the Grande Prairie Public Library, which took place in July and August of 2011 and 2012. The Reading Buddies program pairs lower elementary students with teen volunteers for reading practice over the summer. The aim of the study was to discover how much impact the program would have on participating children's reading levels and attitudes towards reading.
