Social Media is not a monolith. It doesn't tell you what to do. There are no rules. There are countless ways to use Twitter; the key is that the use of the social media needs to be fully integrated into the teaching -- specifically for the purpose of teaching the content and skills of the course. So, the trick is to figure out how to do that for your course. And there's a good chance that a PLN model isn't gonna work for your kids. As for WHY it's important for kids to take part in authentic social media (rather than the walled garden variety), I wrote a post yesterday where I tried to sort of lay out the framework of what we're looking at on the future grid of 21st century education. It's my attempt to argue what authenticity in education means now and for the future, and I'd welcome any criticism of it. Anyway, Social Media is what you make it. It's yours to tinker with. So, use your imagination.

And since we're big fans, every year we link to Flocabulary's Year in Rap. Flocabulary is an online learning platform that features educational songs, videos and resources for grades K-12. For the last two years, Flocabulary has created a Year in Rap as a supplement to its popular Week in Rap, which is produced in partnership with Channel One News. This year we thought it would be fun to formally collaborate with them and offer a contest in which students are invited to write lyrics for their own mini "Years in Rap." C-Span's video library includes a section called Constitution Clips. Constitution Clips is comprised of videos of members of Congress and Presidents giving speeches that relate to sections of the US Constitution. "Common-Core Tests to Take Up to 10 Hours Districts will get 20 days to administer By Catherine Gewertz New tests being designed for students in nearly half the states will take eight to 10 hours, depending on grade level, according to guidance released last week. The new information comes from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC , one of the two big groups of states that are building tests in mathematics and English/language arts for the Common Core State Standards ."

C-Span is hosting a documentary video creation contest for middle school and high school students. The contest is open to middle school and high school students. To enter, students need to create a documentary video 5-8 minutes long about an issue, event, or topic that has helped them understand the role of the federal government in their lives. The prizes for the winners of the contest range from $250 to $5,000 for students and $125 to $1000 for the students' schools.

"The Story Map interactive includes a set of graphic organizers designed to assist teachers and students in prewriting and postreading activities.
