A mother's sensitivity may help language growth in children with autism spectrum disorder - 0 views

  • Maternal sensitivity is defined in the study as a combination of warmth, responsiveness to the child's needs, respect for his or her emerging independence, positive regard for the child, and maternal structuring, which refers to the way in which a mother engages and teaches her child in a sensitive manner. For example, if a child is playing with colored rings, the mother might say, "This is the green ring," thus teaching the child about his environment, says Messinger. In this study, maternal sensitivity (and primarily, sensitive structuring) was more predictive of language growth among toddlers developing autism than among children who did not go on to an autism diagnosis. One possible explanation is that children with autism may be more dependent on their environment to learn certain skills that seem to come more naturally to other children.
  •
A new study by researchers from the University of Miami shows that maternal sensitivity may influence language development among children who go on to develop autism. Although parenting styles are not considered as a cause for autism, this report examines how early parenting can promote resiliency in this population. The study entitled, "A Pilot Study of Maternal Sensitivity in the Context of Emergent Autism," is published online this month and will appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

Wondering Why Always Tired? Check The Side Effects of Your Medication | The Diabetes Club - 0 views

  •
If you are always tired you may have already told your doctor about the problem, only to hear him/her say: "According to your lab tests, there isn't anything wrong with you", or "I have good news, your tests are normal, you are just fine". Well, if this is the case and you are on prescription drugs such as diuretics, consider the possibility that the drugs you are taking may be the reason why you are always tired since one of many side effects of many commonly used prescriptions and non-prescription drugs is fatigue.

On a diet? Try mind over milkshake - health - 05 June 2011 - New Scientist - 0 views

  •
IF YOU want to lose weight, convince yourself that everything you eat is highly calorific. It could lower your levels of a hunger hormone, potentially suppressing your appetite. Alia Crum at Yale University and her colleagues gave 46 healthy volunteers the same 380-calorie milkshake but were told it was either a sensible, low-calorie choice or an indulgent, high-calorie one. The team also measured levels of ghrelin - a hormone released by the stomach when we are hungry - before and after participants drank the shake. Ghrelin levels have been shown to spike half an hour before mealtimes and return to normal after eating. Volunteers who thought they had indulged showed significantly greater drops in ghrelin levels than those who thought they had consumed less. The authors suggest that merely thinking that one has eaten something unhealthy can quell hunger pangs and perhaps help curb overeating (Health Psychology, DOI: 10.1037/a0023467). The study shows that food labels can affect consumption in unexpected ways, says David Cummings, an endocrinologist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Light Weight Wheelchair Light Weight Wheelchair are lighter weight than standard wheelchairs and are offered in more sizes to fit individuals who are spending much of the day in a wheelchair.Light Weight Wheelchairs offer more color choices, and more adjustable components to allow for longer sitting tolerance. These chairs have the ability to accept seating options for individuals who need more support than upholstery can provide. Lightweight wheelchair are typically designed with folding frames to decrease the overall width for storage or transport and with limited component adjustability and often do not allow adjustment of the rear axle location. While some lightweight wheelchairs do have adjustable axles, clinicians at the Center for Assistive Technology (CAT) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have stated that the range is usually not enough to have a large effect on the fit for a wheelchair user. If the wheelchair prescribed cannot be adjusted sufficiently to place the axle in the correct location for his or her body dimensions, it will negatively affect propulsion mechanics and, in turn, increase the risk of RSI, pain, and dysfunction in upper limbs, which may prematurely lead the wheelchair user to require a powered mobility device. Child Care with Cerebral Palsy - 0 views

Cerebral palsy-also known as CP-is a condition caused by injury to the parts of the brain that control our ability to use our muscles and bodies. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. Often the injury happens before birth, sometimes during delivery, or soon after being born. Physical symptoms typically appear in the first few years of life. Cerebral Palsy are frequently slow to reach developmental milestones such as learning to roll over, sit, crawl, smile, or walk. Cerebral Palsy occurs in 1 in every 300 children (Source: Center for Disease Control). Cerebral Palsy is a condition that effects the brain and nervous system and can cause many different symptoms ranging from extremely mild to extremely severe. There are different kinds of CP: spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic, hypotonic, and mixed. We believe Sadie is spastic. Cerebral palsy (CP) children can also have learning problems, speech, problems with hearing or seeing (called sensory problems), intellectual differences, and behavioral or emotional challenges. Cerebral palsy does not always cause serious disabilities. Usually, the greater the injury to the brain, the more severe the CP. Cerebral Palsy (CP) can be mild, moderate, or severe. Mild CP may mean a child is clumsy. Moderate CP may mean the child walks with a limp. He or she may need a special leg brace or a cane. More severe CP can affect all parts of a child's physical abilities.Child with moderate or severe CP may have to use a wheelchair and other special equipment. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage or abnormal development to parts of the brain responsible for controlling muscles and movement. The damage or abnormal growth usually occurs before, during or shortly after birth.
