@font-face gotchas « Paul Irish - 1 views

  • There are a few reasons why smiley is a better solution: Webkit+Font Management software can mess up local references, like turning glyphs into A blocks.  (crbug.com/33173) On OS X, Font Management software may alter system settings to show a dialog when trying to access a local() font that's accessible outside of Library/Fonts. More detail on my bulletproof post. (crbug.com/29729) Font Explorer X is also known to mess up other stuff in Firefox: bugzil.la/531771 Although it's unlikely, you could reference a local() font which is completely different than what you think it is. (Typophile post on different fonts, same name) At the very least its a risk, and you're ceding control of the type to both the browser and host machine. This risk may not be worth the benefit of avoiding the font download. These are all pretty edge case issues, but it's worth considering. FontSquirrel has already made the smiley syntax the new default in the Generator, and you should use it going forward as well.
  • And.. regarding @font-face syntax I now recommend the bulletproof smiley variation over the original bulletproof syntax.
  • @font-face { font-family: 'Graublau Web'; src: url('GraublauWeb.eot'); src: local('?'), url('GraublauWeb.woff') format('woff'), url('GraublauWeb.ttf') format('truetype'); }
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • in Webkit (Chrome/Safari), applying font-weight:bold to faux-bold some @font-face'd text will not succeed. Same applies for font-style:italic.
  • text-transform doesn't play well with @font-face in current implementations.
  • @font-face doesnt play nice with css transitions.
  • If a @font-face declaration is within a media query @media screen { ..., it will fail in Firefox.
  • SVG Fonts - Currently SVG is the only way to get webfonts working on iPhone and iPad.

    OpenAI Playground is a cutting-edge web-based tool designed to facilitate the construction and evaluation of predictive language models. Unlike ChatGPT, which excels at understanding context and can produce high-quality content even with vague prompts, OpenAI Playground requires specific prompts and settings for better-quality outputs. The tool boasts many purpose-specific preset prompts, ensuring seamless customisation through adjustable parameters such as the model, response length, and temperature. OpenAI Playground also accommodates diverse base language models, allowing users to handpick the one that perfectly resonates with their preferred conversational style. OpenAI Playground's Pros: Preset options for different tasks, such as text-to-command and translation Suited for specific use cases where preset models and settings are needed OpenAI Playground's Cons: Requires specific prompts and settings for better-quality outputs It can be challenging to use if you're not familiar with LLMs OpenAI Playground's Pricing: OpenAI Playground offers a comprehensive pricing structure based on the number of tokens used. 1 word = 1 token For example, Chat, model gpt-3.5-turbo costs $0.002 for 1K tokens, while InstructGPT, model Davinci costs $0.0200 for 1K tokens.

50 Design Problems In 50 Days: Real Empathy For Innovation - 0 views

  •
    I recently travelled 2517 miles to try to solve 50 problems in 50 days using design - a journey that would challenge me to fundamentally rethink my understanding of the user-experience design process. I set myself a challenge. I wanted to test the limits of design's ability to solve problems - big and small. To do this, I left the comfort of my computer chair and set out into the unknown. Each day, I had 24 hours to observe a problem, attempt to solve it and then communicate the solution.............read more
