Why We Like Diigo - School Computing - 0 views

  •
We all use the web to research information, but until recently this meant saving copies of web pages as files or printing them out as you visit them in order to collect, save, highlight, or annotate each one. A new web browser tool has made it possible to do all of this electronically. I'm now able to mark up web pages as easily as if I were using a yellow highlighter and a red pen. When I return to those web pages my annotations are still there, and I can also choose to see others' annotations. I no longer need to copy and paste between web pages and Word to take notes, and to keep track of what came from where. This process is all digitally facilitated with the Diigo social bookmarking and annotating tool. This tool has shifted the way I read the world wide web to be much more active. Diigo (http://www.diigo.com) keeps track of my annotations and categorizes the sites based on the tags I specify. This ability to interact with websites in the same way I use a paper textbook means that I can highlight passages, "dog-ear" important pages, and scribble in the margins. I can do all of this individually or collaboratively with others.

Education: Competition vs Collaboration - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  • Further the sort of competition driven by these ‘High Stake' assessments hides the underlying social, racial and gender issues that allow a system to produce great results for some but not all of its students
  •
In a time where much of the debate around education is linked to performance on national and international assessments such as PISA, TIMMS, PIRLS and in Australia, NAPLAN combined with calls for market-driven reforms there is a danger that a climate of competition between schools and systems will grow.

How Web 2.0 has changed the face of education - 0 views

  • The term Web 2.0 was coined in 2004 to describe a shift towards new ways of using the web as a platform for tools and services that have an emphasis on user participation and interaction.

  • While this may be appropriate in some circumstances, it is important to educate children about safe internet use, and make them aware of the risks, so that their approach to using the internet is safe outside school as well
  • Other concerns include the potential for some online tools to be a distraction to learners in class. This is largely an issue of classroom management and is not specific to Web 2.0
  • However, using Web 2.0 for learning is more about particular methods and approaches to teaching than introducing a new set of technologies and tools
  • However, this is not about technology for technology's sake and we need to use technology when it is effective and appropriate to do so. As with most new technology, successful implementation relies on effective leadership, reliable infrastructure and support, and the space and time to allow teachers to innovate and embed technology into their everyday practice.
