There are numerous VPN types providing different levels of online protection which the users can opt for after deciding their requirements. VPN types are differentiated by the tunneling protocols used in them. You have got tunneling protocols like PPTP, L2TP, IPSec, SSL etc. However, it would be better if we discuss a bit about what is VPN before taking about VPN types.

In order to connect two LAN (Local Area Network) over public infrastructure like Internet you would need a VPN gateway also called VPN router. Using the gateway, you can widen the reach of LAN by connecting to single or numerous VPN gateways. They are essential for all personal as well as corporate networks as both of them are connected by using VPN servers using Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS). As mentioned above, Internet provides the infrastructure through which LANs are connected.
