    "NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Low vitamin D levels in the body may be deadly, according to a new study hinting that adults with lower, versus higher, blood levels of vitamin D may be more likely to die from heart disease or stroke.

    Vitamin D is an essential vitamin mostly obtained from direct sunlight exposure, but also found in foods and multivitamins.

    Dr. Annamari Kilkkinen, at the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki, Finland, and colleagues compared blood levels of vitamin D and deaths from heart disease or stroke over time in 2,817 men and 3,402 women in Finland."

    Plasma calcidiol and serum PTH concentrations were inversely related, with PTH rising slowly as calcidiol concentrations declined below 110 nmol/L (95 CI: 60, 168 nmol/L). More than 90% of the men and women had calcidiol concentrations below this value in the wintertime. The high prevalence of lower wintertime calcidiol values may increase risk of bone loss in elderly men and women.

    "ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2009) - Women with breast cancer should be given high doses of vitamin D because a majority of them are likely to have low levels of vitamin D, which could contribute to decreased bone mass and greater risk of fractures, according to scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center."

    Scientists funded by the NCI analyzed vitamin D levels in each woman, and the average level was 27 nanograms per milliliter; more than two-thirds of the women had vitamin deficiency. Weekly supplementation with high doses of vitamin D -- 50,000 international units or more -- improved the levels, according to Peppone's study.

    The U.S. Institute of Medicine suggests that blood levels nearing 32 nanograms per milliliter are adequate.

    Serum levels of bone specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin were elevated in patients with high grade stress fractures compared with control subjects with no symptoms: 37.6 versus 26.2 units/L, and 10.8 versus 8.8 ng/mL, respectively. Levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D were lower in patients with high grade stress fractures (25.3 ng/mL) than in control subjects (29.8 ng/mL). This study revealed that several parameters can distinguish soldiers with high grade stress fractures, but their predictive value and precise pathogenetic role remain unclear.

    Depression may be triggered by low vitamin D levels in the blood, according to a new study published in the Aug 19, 2009 issue of European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

    The study led by Nanri A and colleagues from International Medical center of Japan in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan found that in November, people with their serum levels of vitamin D falling in the highest quartile were 49 percent less likely to feel depressed.

    The study involved 527 municipal employees aged 21 to 67 who worked in two municipal offices in Japan. It was meant to examine the association between vitamin D deficiency and depression

    CONCLUSIONS-Body size was a strong determinant for 25(OH)D, with concentrations being suboptimal in most obese participants. Randomized controlled trials [using dosages sufficient to improve 25(OH)D also for the obese] are required to determine whether clinically relevant improvements in glucose metabolism can be obtained by vitamin D supplementation.
