This time last year I wrote a post outlining how online reading patterns had changed over 2010. The habits and products for reading on the Web have continued to evolve over 2011. This year, for example, Google+ arrived on the scene and changed the way many people find and discuss topical articles. We also saw continued innovation in mobile and tablet reading apps.

Autodesk has just released 123D Catch for the iPad, which allows anyone to automatically turn panoramic style photos into 3D models. The app allows users to take up to 40 photos of a specific object, which are then uploaded to Autodesk Cloud for processing. From there, the 3D model can be rotated on the tablet, shared, or even printed by a 3D printer like MakerBot.

What do you think of when you hear the word "tablet"?  For most it would be Apple or more specifically the iPad.  When the iPad was released in 2010 it quickly gained popularity amongst the masses.  Since then the market share held by Apple's iPad has been increasing steadily.

Internet-connected devices like tablets and Smart TVs will continue to complement and replace some traditional methods of search, video-centric activities, and advertising. For example, 30 percent households with an Internet-connected device used it to rent at least one movie in the past month. Approximately 35 percent of mobile phone owners use their phones to look up listings while watching TV.

Google unveiled its own Nexus tablet, the Nexus 7, at the Google I/O conference Wednesday in San Francisco. The 7-inch tablet running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will have a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor as well as a 1280x800 IPS display with a 178-degree viewing angle.

On the social front, IT service desk social management tools will establish an interactive relationship with end users, enhance end-user productivity, provide a platform to share information and ideas, and market the value of IT to the business." In the fourth quarter of 2011, Gartner identified the 10 technologies and trends that will have the biggest impact for most organizations in 2012. They are: 1. Media tablets and beyond, 2. Mobile-centric applications and interfaces, 3. Contextual and social user experience, 4. The Internet of things, 5. App stores and marketplaces, 6. Next-generation analytics, 7. Big data, 8. In-memory computing, 9. Extreme low-energy servers and 10. Cloud computing.

Just when you thought you'd paid the last booking fee and covered the final rental car transaction, you're suddenly hit with an outstanding roaming charge. Harummph. Connected travelers who can't go without their mobile devices are facing associated fees that seem to be higher than ever - or maybe it's because they're using more data than ever before. Either way, travelers have found ways to get around the dreaded roaming charge, or at least, reduce it as much as possible. Communications app textPlus surveyed 500 respondents who use their mobile devices when traveling both domestically and internationally. icrosoft on Monday revealed a family of super-thin tablets called Microsoft Surface to compete against Apple's iPad and to extend the lifetime of Windows, its flagship product of 30 years. The launch is a concession that the tablet will likely become the workhorse of the trillion-dollar information technology industry, a radical demotion of the desktop computer. "We've ushered in a new era of cloud computing and embraced mobility," CEO Steve Ballmer said at the event. Microsoft has positioned the Surface family of touchscreen devices as a fundamental part of interacting with its next-generation operating system.
