Twitter™ as a Study Prompt: Engaging Adult Learners on the Go | Journal of Nu... - 0 views

"Student feedback about the use of Twitter was uniformly positive. Only one student suggested an improvement and requested more frequent study tweets. Examples of student evaluation comments included: "I LOVED the Twitter questions! It was something that kept me studying all semester." "I really liked the Twitter 'snack learning.' I only wish there were more 'tweets' covering more topics. It was a nice review to go over to prepare for comps. . . . Twitter is a good way to reach students during the day to give us something to think about.""

The Open Notebook - An Army of Helpers: Twitter as a Reporting Tool - 0 views

""Twitter is really useful for simultaneous monitoring of events in real time," says Witze (who is also on TON's Board of Directors). At another meeting, the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston in March 2015, she went to a session about the MAVEN mission to Mars. She used real-time Twitter feeds to get a sense of what the scientists in the room thought was important, and wrote up this story while the speakers were still talking. The real-time feedback she got from Twitter was "like having a small army of smart people helping out," Witze says. And following the live tweets provides "a whole other level of commentary" that can be valuable for identifying sources to interview for a story. "

A nice breakdown of Twitter search methodology we might parallel in other contexts. "You probably skipped right over the most important word used by the five sources above. It's everyone's favorite word, and one you should add to any Twitter search that's seeking personal experiences: Me. (And its close cousin "my.") Most people relating a personal experience - aka, good sources - will use it. Most people observing from afar - aka, useless sources - won't. Let's look again at those five sources, and this time pay attention to the words they used that enabled us to find them. There's another word variation they all have in common."

Potential flaws in genomics paper scrutinized on Twitter : Nature News & Comment - 0 views

"A recent Twitter conversation that cast doubt on the conclusions of a genomics study has revived a debate about how best to publicly discuss possible errors in research. Yoav Gilad, a geneticist at the University of Chicago in Illinois, last month wrote on Twitter that fundamental errors in the design and data analysis of a December 2014 study2 led to an unfounded conclusion about the genetic similarities between mice and humans."

Why I use twitter | Mallemaroking - 5 views

"I cannot sit on the fence. I like twitter and what it offers. I have learned things I never would, built genuine relationships with international people who I would have perhaps have only met over a quick coffee at a conference. And I have changed the way I speak about science. It is interesting, and often funny. It can of course be a harsh and challenging space. I am genuinely horrified at what I have seen some colleagues endure online - particularly the women: but it is here to stay. I wish my female colleagues and women in general were always treated well, and as people, but the only thing I can personally do is contribute to a positive space. I believe twitter is a strong positive for science, and it is a worthwhile investment of your time. This short document has a few ill-considered ideas about what I like about it.   "

Rethinking Twitter in the Classroom | Vitae - 6 views

Ah, this is so interesting. Over lunch I announced that I love how Twitter is being used in OLE. I can see integrating it in a similar way that OLE is: As a way to announce that assignments (or makes) are complete. Given that 'ah hah' moment with me, and this article, it's pretty clear that there's a lot you can do with it, on many levels. Knowing your audience and making sure it meshes with the parameters and goals of the course are key.

Serendipitous Learning on Twitter - ProfHacker - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education - 1 views

"I'm not even looking at my Twitter feed but I am looking at a particular hashtag of interest; someone has linked to a blogpost. I go to the blogpost, which has a link to another blogpost, where there is an interesting string of comments and… I've learned serendipitously. It was not my plan to follow that path, but hyperlinks made it possible"

On Twitter, Scott Simon's Long Goodbye To His Mother : The Two-Way : NPR - 0 views

"And his tweets, some of them uncomfortably raw, struck a nerve. Fellow journalists, technology writers and countless others spent the past several days monitoring Twitter, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. An online community that is so often dismissed for being quintessentially banal - think of the proverbial tweet of what someone had for breakfast - embraced Scott's grief in a way we rarely see play out in public. How a Tweet Turned Into the Best New Multiplayer Game in Years | WIRED - 1 views

  • One of the weirdest, coolest, most hyped multiplayer games in years is here, and it started with a tweet: “Contemplating building a game entirely with friends on twitter/fb. Totally open and ‘Mad Lib’ style. Could be fun or totally awful.” The tweet, posted by Mike Mika a little more than a year ago, was followed by another. It showed a crude red box among white and gray platforms. “Where to go with this?” it read. “I’ve started a new project, it draws a red box. Thinking platformer. #helpmedev.”
