The taiga or coniferous forest is probably the world's largest land biome. It is located south of the tundra and stretches across portions of North America. Europe and Asia. During the summers, the soil remains very wet and is suitable for lichens and mosses. Fir and spruce trees grow well in this environment. The trees provide homes for many birds including the crossbill, which is capable of cracking cones to eat the seeds. A variety of animals are found in the taiga. They include moose, weasels. wolves, deer. Lynx, caribou, porcupines, beaver, mink and bears.

Shrub and scrubland biomes are found in dry, temperate area. They have mild winters and very hot summers. Dry weather and lightening storms sometimes cause flash floods during the summer. Flash fires start and spread quickly. They make room for new plants to grow by burning the large, older plants. The heat of the fire causes seed shells to crack. After the fire, the seeds sprout and grow into new plants. The main plants are low-growing woody plants with evergreen leaves. These plants have a tough skin that holds in moisture and thorns that protect the plants from grazing animals. Many plants have long roots that enable them to find water underground. Some suck water from the stems of other plants.

Issues Tropical rainforests are quickly disappearing as a result of logging and clearing for timber, livestock grazing, plantations, and the harvest of other natural resources. 31 million hectares of tropical rainforest are destroyed each year.  That is an area larger than Poland. Status All tropical rainforests are in great danger of being destroyed. They once covered 14% of the earth’s land surface but now only cover 6%. Some scientists believe that, at the current rate of destruction, the remaining forests could be destroyed in less than 40 years.
