10 Essential Books for Thought-Provoking Summer Reading (these look great!)

James Mollison  A photography book which shows pictures of where children sleep around the world. Combines a portrait of the child with a picture of their bedroom. Great book for see-think-wonder

60 second summary videos of major books kids would study at school (e.g. Romeo & Juliet, 1984, Pride & Prejudice). Great idea for tech integration: could do 60 second summaries of a chapter, a whole book, or of a character.  Would be good to show kids too, but had some rather inappropriate ads on some of the ones I saw, which is a shame.

A introductory film for the new digital edition of The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, a classic book that has played a key role in the world's understanding of the Holocaust. The app takes the original text, published 65 years ago, and adds video interviews and other background material. The Diary of a Young Girl app, made by Beyond the Story, is available on iPad via Apple's AppStore

I have written several posts before on the importance of making presentation meaningful and interesting. Not just creating a PowerPoint because it's the easiest tool for you to create a visual representation of your content. Comic books are what I consider to be attention grabbers. After bringing out several samples, you now have the student's attention. It's what you do with that attention that really matters. For this post I thought I would share some great web 2.0 tools that allow you and your students to make comic books. I urge you to make these assignments interesting, and relevant. Make sure that they are strongly tied to important curriculum standards and benchmarks. Just because the form of presentation and activity creation is "fun" does not mean that the substance in the curriculum is not important.
