Margaret Chin, a longtime housing and immigration rights advocate who grew up on Mott Street, is the first Asian-American woman on the New York City Council and the first Chinese-American to represent Chinatown, a feat achieved after three losing bids for the Council. She taught for 14 years in LaGuardia Community College’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education, and in 1974 helped establish Asian Americans for Equality, an advocacy group.
