Online Safety - 0 views

Webwisekids has resources for teaching Internet safety that are appropriate for middle school to high school age children. Online videos and lesson plans help make it easier to plan lessons to teach about Internet safety. The stories used do not sound contrived or artificial at all, and are definitely worth checking out. The ability to order games to reinforce the concepts taught through the lessons is an added bonus that might make this an attractive option for teaching about safety.
  •
The site has a wide array of information from simulations that teachers/parents can conduct with students/children, a list of dangers on the web, true stories of children and child predators, and a list of ways to prevent online child victimization.
  •
This site offers safety tips through videos and games. Real-life scenarios are presented to reinforce the basic tips being taught. The examples given are realistic, and can get otherwise naive students to be more aware of their activities on the internet. The online videos can be easily incorporated into any classroom at the start of the semester. This is a great resource for any child or teen.

This is another safety website that I found. I like the left hand column that allows the user to search by topic. I thought that many of the topics (i.e. Is your child at risk) would be very helpful to parents that may not know a lot about internet safety. Overall, the website is kind of busy and contains a lot of unnecessary information. If I were to recommend this site to parents, I would tell them to read the left column by topic.

Professor Garfield Foundation: Internet Safety and You - 0 views

  •
This series of cartoons, activities, and games teaches kids about Internet safety, cyberbullying, determining if information is valid, and the different types of media available on the Internet. Professor Garfield is a blast from the past for me, but the content is presented in such a way that kids of any age should appreciate it. It appears that this site is geared more for elementary age kids.

At first, I didn't realize that this was a government website. Users can look just by topics and then look by topics. The main purpose of the website is not just child safety online, but rather overall safety (i.e. avoiding identity theft). When the user looks at the child privacy portion of the site, parents are able to find several helpful and an easy to read site. Overall, I think this would be a great site for the novice internet user.
