I absolutely love it when teachers and students create, remix, and mash up media; it's a fantastic way to encourage deeper learning and media literacy. But one issue that complicates digital freedom of expression is copyright law. While many would argue that copyright law is outdated and badly in need of an overhaul, it's still critical that adults and kids alike have a basic understanding of what's legal and ethical while playing with other people's intellectual property. Here's a list of videos I collected to help you navigate the murky waters of copyright law in educational settings.

While it's highly unlikely a teacher would be taken to court for copyright infringement in the case of showing a movie at school, it's still useful to have a working knowledge of the law and how to be good citizens when showing media. "Textbook publisher Pearson set off an unfortunate chain of events with a takedown notice issued aimed at a copy of Beck's Hoplessness Scale posted by a teacher on one of Edublogs' websites (You may recall Pearson from such other related copyright nonsense as The $180 Art Book With No Pictures and No Free Textbooks Ever!). The end result? Nearly 1.5 million teacher and student blogs taken offline by Edublogs' host, ServerBeach."

"On page 175 of the document, I included a simple diagram titled "The Networked Teacher". It was produced to support my discovery of emerging teacher networks supported by the advancement of social software. Of any idea in the dissertation, this particular theory and diagram may have had the greatest appeal, especially to those who were experiencing this phenomenon. The diagram has been reused, remixed, redistributed and used in hundreds of presentations by educators around the world. Below, I have included the evolution of a simple diagram as evidenced by several linguistic translations and a video inspired by the concept."

Cool example of the power of openness, and how ideas can be remixed for different contexts when the proper copyright licensing is applied from the get-go.

"By "it", I mean my work, which includes images, visuals, infographics, infoflyers, blog posts, how to guides, text, jpgs, videos, pdfs, etc.  Just because I love my work, spend HOURS writing, designing and creating does not mean I want someone else to take credit for it. Just because I share my work for free online DOES NOT mean that I give away ALL my rights. I have chose a special kind of copyright license to encourage others to (hopefully) learn from my work."
