Designing a Dual Layer cMOOC/xMOOC - 1 views

  •
"The xMOOC path is pretty much in place with EdX. They have a good module-based system for presenting and assessing instructivist knowledge. Add on top of that they have connected to other systems through single sign-on and they are down with APIs… they have a system that is ready to connect with other systems as well as allow learners to move in and out as need with ease. The cMOOC system that sits alongside that? That is another beast. Technology exists to create a learner-centered system (see A Domain of One's Own)…. but how does this scale to possibly tens of thousands of learners?"

7 Things You Should Know About Intelligent Tutoring Systems - 0 views

  •
"An intelligent tutoring system is computer software designed to simulate a human tutor's behavior and guidance. Because these systems are able to interpret complex student responses and can learn as they operate, they are able to discern where and why a student's understanding has gone astray and to offer hints to help the student understand the material at hand. Intelligent tutors provide many of the benefits of a human tutor to very large numbers of students. Intelligent tutoring systems can also provide real-time data to instructors and developers looking to refine teaching methods."

College for America spins off its custom-made learning management system - 0 views

  •
"LeBlanc and College for America are calling it a "learning relationship management system," a composite term to describe a learning management system build on top of Salesforce, the popular customer relationship management software. LeBlanc said the system aims to strike a balance between "lots of things that CIOs love" -- such as software as a service and cloud hosting -- with "what educators love.""

"We use this chord diagram in our LMS subscription, offered with MindWires, to show the movement in the LMS market - from the old system to the new system. We got great feedback, so we decided to use the same format to represent the relationship between the LMS market and the SIS market."

A Comparison of Learning Management System Accessibility - 1 views

  •
"Learning management systems have become the primary delivery platform in most higher education systems for course-related activities such as lecture presentations, readings and assignments, discussions, and quizzes. Until a few years ago, access for learners and instructors with disabilities was either poorly supported or not considered at all in many popular tools. Due to lack of, or limited, accessibility in learning management systems, students were not able to fully or independently participate in key course activities."

New strategy would drop college textbook costs to zero - 0 views

  •
"Although the open-source textbook concept has been embraced by student groups such as the Student Government Association in College Park, university officials say the challenges include connecting professors with the materials they need for the textbooks and creating a system to assess the quality of the books. Another complication: Many universities are bound to contracts with private companies to run campus bookstores, where many students purchase their textbooks. University System of Maryland financial records show that the bookstore contracts are not always lucrative, however - last year the system lost about $1 million."

A Model for Developing High-Quality Online Courses: Integrating a Systems Approach with... - 2 views

  •
"As the demand for online education continues to increase, institutions are faced with developing process models for efficient, high-quality online course development. This paper describes a systems, team-based, approach that centers on an online instructional design theory (Active Mastery Learning) implemented at Colorado State University-Global Campus. CSU-Global Campus is a newly-created online campus within the Colorado State University System, and launches in Fall 2008 with fully-online undergraduate degree completion programs and Master's degrees."

"But the metric system is another matter. "I don't understand why y'all don't use the metric system" is something I've heard too often. I don't argue with them because there is no technical argument for why we haven't adopted the Système Internationale - our refusal is based on emotion and familiarity."

Educause releases blueprint for next-generation learning management systems | InsideHig... - 0 views

""The biggest elephant in the room is that a lot of the systems that are used in higher ed are very course-centric in nature," Kroner said. "What we see is that probably is the biggest limiting factor of not just current-gen ed-tech products, but also the administrative systems that support them.""

Cognii - Technology - 0 views

  •
"Cognii VLA is a type of an intelligent tutoring system that engages learners in a real time, one to one coaching conversation, helping them revise their answers. Unlike other tutoring systems, Cognii VLA uses learners' own natural language, not their selections in multiple choice items, as the basis for assessment. Because open response questions are more accurate than multiple choice questions in assessing deep understanding and critical thinking, Cognii VLA can provide better coaching than earlier systems. "

Is the LMS Dead? - 0 views

  •
"I don't believe that the LMS is dead, yes my livelihood depends on it, but the facts are that institutions like "software systems" that help meet strategic objects. The cool part (and often challenging for buyers) is that there are hundreds of systems that use the LMS moniker."

LMS Disruption- Free Web 2.0 Tools Can Co-Exist with the Centralized LMS - 1 views

  •
"My parents are stockbrokers, where the phrase "market correction" is used to describe what's happening to the LMS market right now. Schools are realizing that we have been paying too much for a big, integrated system with many features we don't use, and we're exploring smaller, cheaper systems. Canvas is attempting to offer all of the services that Blackboard does for less money by using free and open source components. "

University digital learning systems 'verging on embarrassing' - 2 views

  •
"Mr Nelson said that a key priority was to improve the online user experience, warning that "the state of most learning management systems is verging on embarrassing in the face of the smartphone generation" and that "grainy footage of an hour-long lecture, filmed from the back of the lecture hall, just won't cut it"."

Citing Sources: A Quick and Graphic Guide - 0 views

  •
"Academia has lots and lots and lots of systems in place for assuring that credit is always given where credit is due. If you're writing a paper, there are particular ways to cite internet sources-- even tweets and Facebook posts. But what about on the internet? We know we're supposed to cite sources, but a standardized system hasn't developed, and in the meantime, you could face a lawsuit if you steal someone else's work, even by accident."

Throw Your Life a Curve - 0 views

  •
"Our view of the world is powered by personal algorithms: observing how all of the component pieces (and people) that make up our personal social system interact, and looking for patterns to predict what will happen next. When systems behave linearly and react immediately, we tend to be fairly accurate with our forecasts. This is why toddlers love discovering light switches: cause and effect are immediate. The child flips the switch, and on goes the light. But our predictive power plummets when there is a time delay or non-linearity, as in the case of a CEO who delivers better-than-expected earnings only to wonder at a drop in the stock price."

Edmodo - first year using it with my students - so far, AWESOME! - 0 views

  •
"For the last few years I've used a website and blog to communicate with students, hold online discussions, offer help and post resources. Maintaining the two different systems wasn't always easy, there were features I wanted, and it was all public. So, this year I decided to use Edmodo with my classes. It has been great already. Edmodo is a free, learning management system that is full featured and easy to use."
