All about Linux: Configuring xterm in Linux - 0 views

  • konsole takes a whooping 8MB and gnome-terminal over 3MB of memory, you can run xterm under 1MB
  • Create a '.Xresources' file in your home directory and enter the values that you want to set. My .Xresources file is as follows:
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • By pressing [Ctrl] key and the middle mouse button, you get a pop-up menu which helps you set/unset a lot of other features of your xterm window like enabling/disabling the scroll bars and so on.

If you use the pop up menu to customize your settings, I don't think there is a way to save your preferences. I think you need to use a text editor to create the .Xresources file as Ravi describes above.

My Ubuntu 9.04 installation does not seem to listen to the .Xresources file. I am trying to figure out why.

Pretty Emacs (fonts) - Alexandre Vassalotti 2007 - 0 views

  • For Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope” and newer, use the packages in Ubuntu repositories.

I think he means the package "emacs-snapshot". The default Emacs in Ubuntu 9.04 is still version 22, which, as far as I can tell, does not support Xfont (in the body of the editor). I certainly can't get it to work, and Emacs is too important to risk using the snapshot ;)

Linux Today - Editor's Note: Ubuntu Is Not Our Savior - 0 views

  • And no matter how superior Ubuntu becomes, Gentoo, Slackware, Red Hat, Fedora, and Debian are more important because they are the primal Linuxes. Everything else flows from them. They are the progenitors, and are essential. Let's also remember non-Linux FOSS operating systems such as FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD. From these also come herds of wonderful things such as routers, firewalls, drivers, network stacks, and stout high-demand servers. (Take a look at the top servers on Netcraft.)
