Lecture on Wed. April 20 at 6pm on Bahamas Blue Holes by Kenny Broad, should be VERY interesting! I will be driving after class to RSMAS and back to campus and will gladly take along anyone who wants to join. As some of you may know, I study the samples that Kenny collects from these caves (very exciting!). It should be really interesting and he's a really great speaker!

Rising sea levels threaten small Pacific island nations - The New York Times - 0 views

  •
Here's an interesting article about an island that could be flooded over and eliminated from Earth.
  •
Should small island nations put efforts in adaptation vs emigration? Here's an interesting quote at the end of the article: "I do not believe that the world should sit idly by while entire countries are slowly but surely annihilated," Takesy said. "And do you really want five million angry Pacific Islanders to come knocking on your door?" raises some very interesting questions over who is responsible!

Japan Whaling Suspension From Sea Shepherd Harassment Not Good Enough For Conservationists - 0 views

Victory? Do you think Japan will stick to their word?? We'll be talking about whaling tomorrow.
  •
"The whale hunts, which Japan says are for scientific purposes, are allowed by the International Whaling Commission as an exception to the 1986 ban, but opponents say they are a cover for commercial whaling because whale meat not used for study is sold for consumption in Japan." What (if any) scientific studies have been done? Why does it require hunting the whales?

snopes.com: Dolphin Hunt in Denmark - 0 views

  •
Horrifying images of the killing of pilot whales (members of the dolphin family) in Denmark- as discussed in todays presentation on poaching
  •
This practice is considered a part of their culture, does that justify the killing of the pilot whales? Or should age old customs (such as this) be banned? Who has the right to make such a decision?
